You could always make techno with just drums without the piano roll ;) lots of different kinds of drums obviously, so some kind of melody is produced. If you do it right, it can be bloody awesome

Mortis you may as well just move to Cubase, it works the same way as you use Fruity, just alot simpler/more effective.
I don't have a midi keyboard and as far as I can tell you need one to get sound out of cubase. I tried Sonar but I didn't like the fact that you have to tap space to get the right tempo of samples, just seems like too much of a pain on the arse when FL does that for you to a certain degree.

cubase as piano roll just like FLstudio
i recently made the transition, and i made my tracks the pattern method like you mortis - the transition very easy.. :)
this video is really really good to show you the pure basics, anybody using FLstudio will be able to understand it, and because its pure basics its a really good place to start :)

I'd firstly recommend to start learning on Cubase. Watch lots of youtube videos , etc etc. Maybe go into studios with some engineers, learn off them (very good ideas as the tips are professional). Make sure your computer is good aswell as your soundcard and make sure you also invest in Monitoring speakers, which ensure a very accurate mixdown (tonally flat sound reference). Obviously also it'd be a good idea to grab alot of Plugins (Sylenth, z3ta, Bass Station, V Station, Nexus (even!!), etc.) , aswell as lots of Samplepacks and some FX plugins too (Sonalksis , Waves). There are other things that come in later but this is the main thing you wanna get sorted.
I think the 2 most important things in production other than engineering itself are having good synthesis skill (being able to effectively produce sounds / making them), and learning how to write/compose music. It is the backbone of music and i think it's essential for any serious producer.
Anyone can use Nexus or straight-out VEC samples, but that's boring and bland !!! It requires a very small amount of skill. Synthesizing on the other hand, Whilst it can be alot of stress , it's an incredible skill to have and as mentioned before i think it's essential for any genre, including Hardcore. I do know that alot of Pro's use Nexus etc. and i think Nexus is amazing if utilised cleverly, but my true respect goes to the Producers in Hardcore who synthesize their own synth sounds and process their own percussion. (Artists such as Inverse, Orbit1, Lumin8 just for example).
When it comes to writing music, anyone can remix stuff. All you need is a Midi and vocals, and there you have it. DJ Tomato featuring MC Pineapple remix of Listen to your Heart or something... What everyone really appreciates are good writers and very well written tunes. This is a different aspect to production to say engineering, but i think it is one of the most important things to have.
With Hardcore, i beleive in a couple of little rules. I do believe that it's true 'Hardcore' nature should be lived out! Considering Hardcore itself has practically no Dynamic range and calls for things sounding punchy and fast, i think that Hard compression is essential on alot of instruments. It should also be as energetic as possible.
I'm kinda blabering on and i'll be here all night , so are there any things in particular you'd want to have my opinion on ???

No you don't. It has a piano roll just like FL, probably easier to use than FL, too. Once you get used to it. A Midi Keyboard however is great for jamming, but not at all essential for Cubase, and Cubase 5 is soooooo sexy
Oh yeah Mortis, if you're still after that choir "ah" synth sound that Acid used in one of his track i came across something you may find interesting mate

my god cubase 5 is so ****in expensive..its like a months mortgage..well if i had one...is it really worth it??????
Yup, i'd take it over a house anyday. Although if i didn't have a house i wouldn't be able to use it.... i'd just stroke the box i think.
Are you a student, or know anybody that is? Can get it cheaper, half price i think, if so.

Your tunes are good mate, if your happy with FL and can produce quite well using it why do you want to switch? I'd try it see how you like it but FL seems to do it for you.
Wait till you start college and just upload your student ID to get it for the educational pricing.
