Any gabber-nut will make it a point to tell you that the two genres are not *that* closely related, as in they're not sister-styles or anything - more like third cousins on the family tree of electronica. It's the same way with the other 'hardcore' styles, so in effect the term "Hardcore" really is just a way to differentiate the faster 4:4 genres from the slow ones.

I would'nt called Sharkeys Bonkers Cd 'Happy Hardcore' would you?

No, I'd probably call it freeform. If there's one benefit to using the wider "Hardcore" name that I can think of, it's the fact that you wouldn't need that name, or, for that matter, "Trancecore". Then again, I think Freeform is sufficiently different to HHC/UKHC (I only use both terms out of respect for both our perspectives) to warrant the separate genre.

quote:
Maybe things are different in Canada [I think you mean Australia - strychnine] (I don't know how long the scene has been over there) but the word 'happy' hardcore is used by some people no longer in the know to ridicule the sound as it brings brings up memories or crappy rip-off tunes that sound more like nursery rhymes.

Well, the scene's been going for quite a while now in Australia (esp. Sydney, where I am) and yeah, we cop a bit of shit from some of the other scenes (in particular gabber). The thing is, with the gabber scene as big as it is, with promoters being able to hold small-to-mid-size gabber-only parties and all, it isn't feasible to call any one genre "hardcore" (unless you know whoever you're talking will read it the same way you do).

quote:
Now this tag I feel doe'nt do justice to some of the banging tunes being produced so I feel a fresh look is needed.

I think it's less a matter of being a different genre of music as having varying degrees of quality within a genre. I mean, no matter how much you love trance or house or whatever, you gotta acknowledge that within each you're gonna have your bad tracks - it's a fact of life. Is it really fair to say that your favourite type of music has a fantastic record of producing quality tracks, when the reality is that you've simply altered the genre boundaries to exclude those tracks that you feel aren't up to the standard? I think not, and I don't think it's fair to draw a line based on year-of-production just because you think that nothing made before or after that line is worthy of the name.

Further to that, it probably says something about our persistence (or stubbornness, whichever you prefer) that in spite of all the criticism, the "Happy" name has stuck and is still commonplace on flyers and stuff. That, and "UK Hardcore" just doesn't roll off the tongue quite as pleasantly as "Happy Hardcore" IMHO. :)

Then again, I'm reading a couple of Sydney events pages on-line now and the author (Fenix) seems hell-bent on using the phrase "Hard-edge" to describe the music played by certain DJ's (who I know from personal experience play HHC/Freeform). I *really* hope this one doesn't take off.

I live in a part of Sweden where it´s very hard to hear hardcore at raves.
Everyone likes Hard-trance and Goa-trance here so that is what gets played, however I have listend to
Hardcore a looong time and I seem to have a different point of view about what is what. This might just be
what we think in Sweden (so it could be wrong).
New-school Gabber: Dj Promo, Nosferatu, G-shock, Neophyte.
Old-school Gabber: The Prophet, 3 steps ahead, Dj Dano.
Bouth Old and New-school are considered hardcore.
Terror/ Speedcore: Nasenbluden, Temper tantrum, Creatures of the occult.
Happy Hardcore: Dj Paul (the 94-96/97 stuff), Dune, Charley & Theo.
I know that this is´t UK stuff but the styles should be the same, right?
I must say that I love all the styles of Hardcore-techno but they are not very simmilar to eachother.
(If I beg a Dj to play Terrorgabber and he playes Dune I would hurt him...)

It´s nice to B importante...
BUT IT´S MORE IMPORTANTE TO B NICE!

To me, any form of UNDERGROUND dance music from 88'+ is Rave. That sums up most if not all Hard dance music. I never think about what its called when listening to it, it's just mint music. Whether it's cheesy or Hard or Dark, up-tempo or down-tempo, it's fine with me, just no commercial chart shit.

Ahh Jungle Techno Crew
Ardcore Bass Groove!
