Hello,
I am a fairly experienced electronic musician, although new to this forum and relatively new to HHXC in general (I've listened on and off to HHXC and related genres for years, but just got really into it). I am writing a album with a lot of influence from happy hardcore, particularly of the genre present on Bonkers - The Next Chapter. I have been listening to massive amounts of happy hardcore, trying to absorb and understand the idioms or cliches that define the genre. I believe I have a pretty fair idea, but I would like to hear what the HHXC veterans of this forum consider to be the definition of the genre. I don't mean "define HHXC", I mean what musical ideas and audio ideas do you think make something be happy hardcore? Also just cliches that are present a lot would be helpful.
Also: Any suggested listening material? (in the vein of Bonkers - The Next Chapter)
thanks!

hxc = hardcore
hhxc = happy hardcore
Interesting that no one here is familiar with the hxc acronym. I am not sure that it is actually used in reference to the hardcore dance scene, i belive the term hxc primarily is used in the hardcore punk/metal scene. also sxe means straight edge... but **** that. happy hardcore is just such a long name to be typing all the time.
now that thats cleared up...

Why would you use "hxc" as an abeviation of Hardcore? Where's the "x" come from?

If you're talking about modern hardcore then Massive Supersaw leads, Big, distorted, off beat basses, cheesy vocals, Rushy breakdowns with big pad/string/piano sections, a fun, non-serious approach.
Acid lines are used in a lot of the freeform stuff and even some of the mainstream tracks.

Thanks! This is closer to what I was looking for, not really into a discussion of the merits or non-merits of acronyms.

DjTriquatra::: I find that most the stuff I like is at about 176bpm. Amen break's seem to be more present in more old school stuff.

Audio Warfare::: I think I do mainly prefer the modern stuff. I definitely like Bonkers better than Happy2beHardcore. H2bH is great but it gets tiring to listen to... Bonkers I can and have listened to for days. What do you mean by "rushy" do you mean, similar to the band Rush? I've noticed some stuff seems to written with a triplet 6/8 feel on top of it.
My favorite tracks off Bonkers - The Next Chapter are:
Sharkey - Never Say Die (Kevin Energy Mix)
Marc Smith & Gammer - Building Shaker (VIP remix) <<<This I think has the 6/8 feel.
Both tracks totally rule. I also like the first track on the first disc:
Darwin feat. Fraz - We're Getting Faster
its a nice intro to the whole thing.

when I tell my friends I'm working on a hardcore track they think hardcore metal and it gets very frustrating having to tell them over and over that I mean hardcore techno. I wish it ould get through their heads.
