For active monitors, you'll need an active sub. You then connect the sub to your souncard (not to your speakers) via a 1/4" TRS balanced input jack.

Not after you go above a certain volumn threshold. The Mackie HR624(a 6.5") bass response really drops off in comparison with the HR824(8") above 80db. A 6.5" woofer just can't move enough air. Hence the reason it's ideal to have a dedicated sub (12"+). With that being said however you can get away with a 6.5" if you have a small room.

IMO, You don't need a Sub unless your producing DnB, Breaks or some Bass oriented music. I have 5" Woofers and I have a tight low bass response and it does me well and I can just get the Subs correct when doing Breaks/DnB, So imo, it's not a necessity but obviously it's good to have one. :)

If you want a monitor from KRK that would be on a level playing field with the B2031As you would need to compare them to the RP8. That's an 8" VS. an 8". Otherwise the 2031A's would blow the tiny RP6 out of the water.

Nap, Rokits still have a tight & flatter response than the Truths.

Rokits are deffo the best in their price range. =)

Search some forums, you'll see peoples opinions. :)

http://forum.midiaddict.com/index.php

http://www.dogsonacid.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=4
http://www.blackoutaudio.co.uk/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=3
Etc

Remember it's all subjective, but generally from what I've read, you can do better than the Truths, MK1s, Reveals etc.

Check out Fostex, I hear they're very good, Yorkville too, and KRK etc, for your price range.

That's a link to an indepth comparison of nearfield monitors. The reason it's a good guide is because they reviewed the B2031's against the KRK V8 (krk's top of the line monitor) and it still came out below. In fact the V8 was the worst performing monitor of the bunch.

With that beind said however, I'm remaining unbiased. The only two monitors I've ever heard were the B2031s, and the Mackie HR824s. One cost 500 while the other cost 3000. Did I think the difference between the two of them justified spending an extra 2500? Hell no.

That's a pretty old guide and I wouldn't believe it since I've heard so many great thingd about the V8! And KRK monitors for the matter, eg: http://forum.midiaddict.com/viewtopic.php?t=54097&highlight=krk

Hey guys, i actually went in yesterday and had a listen to 'Hardcore Till I Die 2" on the rokit 6s, the truths 2031a and fostex pm1s, and i must admit the rokit 6s faired better in bass, the sound was warmer and the truths somehow sounded harsh and clangy. As my first listen, ive actually no idea what true flatness sounds like, but i think i should choose what sounds good as when im mixing thats prolly what im striving for.
The fostex pm1s aint bad as well, rokit 6s had a fuller bass sound but.
