What do you think about this description for a mixer...?
::
2 band EQ is provided on each channel for creative mixing techniques.
The new cross fader reverse switch allows you to change direction of the cross fader action.
This feature enables DJs to perform advanced scratch techniques, just like champion DJs.
Two programs with line/phono input.
Microphone input with tone control volume.
Transformer buttons for even faster transformer scratching.
Split monitor system with cue cross fader. This feature allows DJs to practice
the mix before the actual performance.

sounds like a basic mixer that wont hold up. usually the big boys have descriptions of the faders used, number of inputs and how many of each line/phono there are.

The mixer you just described sounds more of a battle style mixer than anything. Unless you plan on doing lots of scratching you probably won't use some of that stuff (transformer buttons), and imo the "cross fader reverse" option that some mixers have seem to enable people who are just learning to scratch. From what I've seen it's easier to scratch with the x-fader reversed and people tend to keep using that, so when they play out and the mixer doesn't have that option they are pretty much fucked.
Now I gonna assume that you wanna spin hardcore. You're gonna want a mixer that has a 3 band EQ on it (high, mid, low). Hardcore has alot of melody in it, and you will need the 3 band EQ to balance it all out. When I first started out I had alot of dj's tell me to get a mixer with 3 channels on it. This really isn't necessary unless you plan to get a third turntable. If you plan on hooking up a cd-j a third channel will make it more convienient, but it's not necessary. So you would probably be fine with a 2 channel mixer. Vestax makes a two channel mixer with 3 band EQ on it and it's pretty cheap (can't think of the model at this moment). You can find it here www.pssl.com
Hope this helps

You can still scratch without transformer and reversed switches. Although a option of adjusting the curve on the crossfader can be helpful

eh, kinda hard to describe. Best way I can think of is, it's how sharp the crossfader cuts when you use it. Someone else might be able to describe it better that I can.

lol :p
the top one would have a less steap curve than the bottom one. Basicly, the curve has to due with at what point records are at there loudest and how hard they cut-in/out like Dash said.
Does that make any sense? :)

That mixer is the cheapest Vestax, it's really a hip hop / scratching / battle mixer... it's okay and I have used it before but...
2 band EQ is provided on each channel for creative mixing techniques.
A high and low EQ
The new cross fader reverse switch allows you to change direction of the
cross fader action.
A wanky feature that that switches the crossfader around - not really useful for mixing, maybe for scratching.
This feature enables DJs to perform advanced scratch techniques, just like champion DJs.
Yeah!
Two programs with line/phono input.
Two channels
Microphone input with tone control volume.
Standard
Transformer buttons for even faster transformer scratching.
Your basic punch button.
Split monitor system with cue cross fader. This feature allows DJs to practice
the mix before the actual performance.
The monitor button :)

a good option to look into as well is how easily replacable the faders are...but i guess it depends on what you do with your mixer.
your basic x-fader curve is pretty much like the bottom one on kernel's pic, it's good for mixing and bringing in a record at a lower volume as you gradually move across the fader. where as the top one is good for scratching and juggling, you can bring the fader over and it will output the sound as if you had the fader all the way over for that record.
if you get a good battle style mixer you should have three options for curves on all faders...as well as hamster switches for all faders.
most transformer buttons i've come across don't hold up that long so i'd suggest not getting one of those.
i'd probably recommend you start out with a 2 channel, since most people don't have 3 decks and usually use only 1 or 2 line-ins. plus you can always buy a slim mixer if you want to connect more stuff. example: we've got 4 decks and 2 cddjs plugged into 3 mixers
