Big names were somewhat modest and more down to earth before the big money started rolling in.
In Happy Hardcore days the scene was small, most big names would have done it as hobby and for sod all cash. Most tracks were released. As soon as cash started to come into the scene, it all changed.
Look at Hixxy for example. He did loads of tracks for CLXH with the full versions mostly never released. No doubt because of the cash paid from CLXH being the motivator to make the tracks opposed to doing them for single releases. Plus not releasing stuff means people are more likely to go to the events to hear stuff they cant get anywhere else.
A lot of artists will see their tracks as their pride and joy and therefore will back them up and look after them (minus the occasional unexpected hard drive failure). Big name artists though see it as a product that made them the big money and so aren't as careful with them and the full masters end up being lost for good.
There's quite a few people who have got hold of unreleased dubplates and upload shitty quality rips and clips to youtube with a camera recording their speaker.
I've commented what I think of some of those people on YT before. They've got the dubplate which is the main envy and a collectors piece. Doing a high quality rip wouldn't devalue that dubplate, but it would preserve that music in this small scene. People have that mentality though of "I've got it, you haven't....Unlucky".
The sad thing is this is how a lot of old films were lost many years ago. Someone gets the master tape reel via working at a cinema, they hoard it without preserving it and when they die, family throw it all out thinking it's junk.
It's a shame to think of unreleased core tracks going the same way. Even with "Force and Styles - Sunshine", if someone ripped a HQ dubplate, how many people would dload it? 100 at tops maybe? Hoarding it will just mean it ends up being lost forever though.
I hope one day when these artists need money they decide to release their old material.

I know it's limited in consolation, currently, but I really do feel like we're making progress. The results might not even be in the next year or so, but I think I can at least preserve for future dissemination.
Archival is my current goal, licensing and release can then follow.

Also, no offense to anyone, but having done a few of these "compeltionist" things I do genuinely worry that we're relying a *lot* on old out of print CD compilations and degrading CDRs. People said about DATs being lost, and hard drives failing, but there *are* backups but the clock is really ticking. Does everyone remember the "Eye Opener" story? Christ.

For those who don't, the vinyl of Eye Opener was *terrible*. The digital release was on Dreamscape 2001 and.... not great (mono?). There was a DAT rip, performed, which Slipmatt did in the early noughties. It eventually found it's way to Al Storm on CD who then happily found it in his shed when he lived proximally to me. Slammin don't have it, Brisk/Trixxy/Anyone else didn't have it. We ripped it using Exact Audio Copy, which completed on a calibrated and setup ripping drive.... and as it finished the CD *SHATTERED* and bits stuck out of the front of the then less calibrated drive.

It was such a tease that in the mix for his CD he used the full intro. I?ll admit I tried and failed to glue it to the end of the version included on this album. It?s a Vinyl Rip https://www.amazon.co.uk/Slammin-Vinyl-Presents-Hardcore-Anthems Hopefully Brisk releases it. If he can.

When I came back to Hardcore after a long hiatus, he was running Raverbaby, doing HTID , pretty much had the market cornered. I might be wrong about it all, but to me, that's someone who wants it all for himself, and it seems it's just that attitude that fks it all up.
All about the money. Yes it's their career, yes it's their livelyhood but there is also a a need to be loyal to those who put that money in their pockets. All artists need to remember that.
The scene has no big money interest now, so I would have thought everything would have been on sale to make money from a scene that's really on it's arse.
BUt it doesn't end there, I spoke to a few people in the scene who are "names" these days and their attitude was ****ing ridiculous. Paranoid, upthemselves, like they are living on borrowed time in the scene. It's not a "happy raving family" anymore. That's why the scene is dead.
I keep forgetting to mention, but I *DID* manage to retroactively clear the Darwin Toytown remixes for inclusion in the Sharkey Completionist bundle along with the non vocal mix. I *DO* have the Vinylgroover remixes which I am still endeavouring to clear for inclusion also.

Jesus, Eyeopener was one of the tunes that hooked me in. I've got the 3 cd Brisk set planned for my next purchase, but any chance of Eyeopener or other tracks being available non-mixed? I just... I can't even. There are so many obscure mixes and albums out there. So many live rave recordings on tape and cd-r. All bound to fail over time. If only we could build a massive database like a library of Congress for hardcore. It'll never happen thanks to rights issues. I just... I'd like to think that 50, 80 years from now there will be a decent record of this legacy. Seriously, all praise to you, Jay.

I think we pulled the actual cd from sale due to low stock. I still have a few, so can re enable briefly on request. Or just nab the digi release 🙏 CDJay

Very ordinary track, wouldn't download it if it was free.
