im after some technics, and ive currently got gemini decks with led display of pitch so once ive sussed a mix of two particular tunes and no it next time round.
i know technics have the smallest deviation out of decks, but....
basically i want to know how you know the exact pitch whilst mixin on your techincs, or if you have to use 'your ear' til you get the pitch correct?
have they got some kind of gates over each percent so you can drop precisely at 1%, 2%, etc?
(as you can prob tell i never had a spin on technics)
any help?

I wouldnt worry bout percemtages mate. Just try and spinn some records. if your gonna be a good dj you need to get past the stage of knowing what record plays at what pace.

its all about practice man, and training those ears to listen if the track your mixing in is be behind or running fast.
when you get good, within about a sec of dropping the new track on beat (in the headphones) you will just go "yeah thats running slow by like 3%" and 9 times out of 10 you will be close.
i dont think even the pro plod boring beat matchers (sasha and diggers - yuck!) can get it 100% matched, what they do is move the pitch fader mid mix (either faster or slower depending on how the track is out) rather than touching the record so you don’t notice the track running out of time – the faster you pic up if your mix is drifting, the quicker you will be able to fix it and hence better mixing ;).

Just gonna reinforce what others have said, real DJs don't beatmatch based on bpm or percentage, it's all by ear. Learn to match without even looking at the decks... that's the best way to do it. Then you rely solely on the beats. :)

Well put. I see a lot of new DJ's that come to rely on beat counters and fancy effects. These guys become lost when they get into a live setting and don't have any of that stuff to use.

Agreed. You don't need that crap. I have much more respect for a dj who makes a mistake and corrects it quickly by ear then someone who does a perfect set with the aid of beat counters etc etc . . . anyone can do the latter it takes practice to do the former.. I'm doing ok now ;)
Much more rewarding, and as people have said you can't rely on the stuff being in he clubs.

Sorry. Got off topic a bit there. To answer your question James D...
No, the Techies do not have any kind of LED display. After using the decks for a while, you will develop a "feel" for them and have a good idea of where you are at on the pitch control.
Also, as I was getting at before, most live gigs that you play will have the Techies. IMO, it is to your advantage to become proficient with them.

aren't we all forgetting the stroboscope? (however it's spelt)
i'm referring to the red dots projected onto the platter,on technics they are unique and on every other deck they're useless.
on the geminis you'll get exact pitch displayed,on technics you can find these exact pitches: -3.3, 0, +3.3, +6 - regardless of whether it's on 33 or 45 rpm.
looking at the dots you'll notice that if you move the pitch then the dots will change speed/direction/stand still.
when the top line is standing still: +6
2nd from top: +3.3
3rd from top (big dots): 0
bottom: -3.3

i think the 2% incremints are next to the pitch, there is no click or groove as you move it, but there are lines drawn on there to know i do believe
