Work - That's the way it is. I try to get back at least once a month and I'm back for all of December, not only can I see the family (or so they think!), it's a whole month of winter where I won't have a huge electricity/heating bill to pay!

Jay, how far would 8000 pounds get you in veitnam? I'm talking decent accommodation for two rather than slumming in some backpackers, food and the occasional refreshing beverage plus a bit of spending money?
How much is a decent (250cc minimum) motorbike?

Quite a long way, in short.
My mate there is renting a good, good sized apartment for 600 USD a month. There's two of them, so therefore 300 USD a month. Two large double bedrooms, one huge kitchen and lounge area, one kind of laundry area that is essentially a balcony, but quite well covered up from the elements (just somewhere to hang stuff and use the washing machine as opposed to a chill-out-and-have-a-beer balcony). One large bathroom. Oh, and one of the bedrooms was ensuite. This is on the eighth floor of a very modern apartment building 15 minute walk from district 1 of Saigon. TV, cable, wi-fi, air-con, fridge, oven, microwave - everything included. Add something around 50 USD for bills each month.
That's accommodation. Food is cheap. Seriously fcuking cheap. This particular apartment building was in district 4, which is a very "local" area on the cusp of district 1 (up market tourist area, and then a close-by, but separate, backpackers district). You can either eat on the streets and get stuff from the market. The price difference probably isn't that much. You're looking at a meal on the street (rice and meat, drink, some soup as well) for about 1 USD. The same thing would cost you about twice that in the backpacker area. Street food doesn't really exist in the tourist area (swanky shops and shopping malls).
Beer on the streets is cheap too. 8,000 Vietnamese Dong for a large bottle of local beer. It's about 21,000 Dong to the (US) dollar.
There are, of course, a whole spectrum of places you can drink, with varying prices. If you go to the proper clubs, you're essentially paying western prices, maybe a little lower. 5 USD for a Gin & Tonic, kinda thing.
But in between street drinking with locals, and going to western style clubs with rich Vietnamese twenty somethings, you've got a plethora of bars on the street, slightly bigger bars, pool clubs, 24 hour bars, sports bar. As a general rule, you're rarely going to be paying more than 1 USD a beer, and 2 USD a spirit in all these places.
Food in restaurants around the backpacker place are still cheap. I used to pay about 2 USD for a gorgeous stir-fry, bread and an iced tea.
Bikes - don't know too much about bike prices. I only rented bikes. And they were only 125cc semi-automatics. Cost just under 40 USD to rent a modern one of those for a month.
All of these prices, by the way, are for Saigon only. I didn't stay long-term anywhere else.
I was spending about 1000 USD a month. $500 of which was going on hotel rent (complications with renting an apartment medium term). The rest was food and booze. And I was drinking heavily three, if not four times a week. I mean, heavily.
So yeah, 8000 GBP is going to get you a year at least, providing you've got someone to split the apartment cost with.

It would be with the other half, so no, not really. Six months is still more than acceptable however. I know you didn't really venture outside saigon but would you be able to guess at prices in other cities?

I would buy the newest pioneer cdjs & mixer. Then buy a car with the about 3k I have left.
Roughly a car at around 2k then add the remaining 1k to my bank account which would be 2k I have left over! haha just save up from there and buy music i needs. :)
Nice vinyl's loved to own those lorenzo!
