made.

I want to start collecting gear, because I'm prety sure it will be hardware, I've failed to get an akai sampler because I dont know which one was used? what did the big boys use? hixxy, dougal, evolution, what was the sequencer? I dont want to use any vsti's or shit like that. want to make the tunes. I dont have a lot of space in my bedroom so i need to keep things small. do akai's have inbuilt sequencers?

try sending a msg to them on fb. they really do respond to fans. altho some may take longer than others.

Brisk is pretty fast at responding, as well as Kevin Energy

Off the top of my head

Akai 3000 sampler
Roland JP-8000 for leads (after 97)
Access Virus for leads and bass (after 97)
Clavia Nord Lead for leads (after 95)
Juno 106 for hoovers
Roland TB-303 and Future Retro 777 for acid
Roland TR-808/TR-909 for drums and percussion
Korg M1 for piano

Sequencer of choice (or lack thereof) was Cubase in the early 90s, running on an Atari...

You'll also have to get a Lexicon PCM reverb unit and a pile of other hardware effects if you're not using VSTs.

You're looking at A LOT of money to get such a vintage setup going.

Either way, it's not about the gear....

Akai samplers were only used for sample playback. The most common one was the S3000XL, but any of the S-series samplers will have that same Akai sound to them.
Most of the sounds used were just samples, from the Roland Alpha Juno (1 or 2, both have the same synth engine) in the case of hoovers. Also organ samples from the Roland JX8P was absolutely raped too, much more so in the earlier 90s though.
For piano's, Korg M1, Roland JD 800 or Roland JV1080/2080 etc. Most of the common sounds you hear though in all cases were just samples.
Sequencers: Cubase on old Atari's or Mac's.

Edit: Typed this before your post Dain-Ja so don't feel that i am contradicting you.

Don't forget your back-busting mixer to plug all those toys in and blend them to perfection into your trusty ol' DAT machine. :P

I would say that the mixing was the biggest contributor to the over all sound of older stuff. I have both an Alpha Juno and S3000XL and the sounds are authentic but still desperately needing that analogue EQ/preamp/compression etc. You say back busting as if it's a bad thing :P

right! you only had a couple of days maximum to get the mixdown right. It's the ability to go back to the work in progress in modern DAW's which makes things sound so polished nowadays.

24 chans at least ideally, could probably get away with 16 though but would be very limiting. But of course, you then also need a sound card with that many outputs/inputs (in order to mix everything at once). You can get 24 chan Mackie mixers for about 500 or maybe less even second hand, either way, with the cost of the sound cards you'll need to buy it's still going to be at least a grand, especially if you factor in cabling.

In 1994/5/6 you needed some of this -

and some of these -

and some of these -

....and then get yourself a better computer, a Mackie 24.8 Bus Mixing Desk (and a bigger room to put it all in) -

....and then learn how to connect it all together and learn how to use it all

and your away. Easy

the "sounds" of 90s hardcore can be replicated with modern day software and hardware that costs spades less. the money spent on a retro setup would be much better spent on a state-of-the-art audio production studio.
