well, im not going to bang on too much - i liked "Universe" and thats about it.
i dont want to hate on darren styles - he has his style of hardcore and thats fine, its not really my thing.
i almost liked "air" ..right up until 49seconds then it went to crap, then it went good again at 1:37seconds....then it went to pot again 2:02..and even worse at 2:25 - just dont think he's got it enough (or the soundfonts by the sounds of things) to pull off that style of epic-ness that most of the epic-y DnB producers pull off..
I mean I dont want to say one trick pony...but it just sounds like a one trick pony trying to do other styles using the same soundsets (he almost made a great chillout/ambient track with the Air one...and its a pisser that he ruined it with abrasive GM-like drums.
*edit*
haha, just read that back to myself, i come off much more of a hater than i thought i would - I dont want to come off as a darren styles hater as i do like some of his music, and ive nothing against him personally, its just my 2cents on the album - i dont really think it was made for me, so i wont take it too personally ;)

i found this to be a decent tune EXCEPT for at 2:02 when that riff started and continued on after 2:25. that is what pretty much ruined the whole track for me. it just sounded so out of place and it def did get worse at 2:25.
EDIT: might as well start reviewing the whole thing since all tracks have been posted on youtube lol
light up the sky- might be an indication of what he'll be working on next, which is commercial pop music (doesn't sound too bad tbh)
holding on- this tune has an 80s vibe i quite like. overall the track is pretty good
breathe again, raining down, outta my head, shining star, pandora- typical DS done right
higher ground- typical DS gone wrong
take you down, rock me out, universe, bassline road, now or never, feel the pressure, days like these, like a bitch- these songs are just awkward to me. many of the riffs and melodies kinda throw off the songs imo. i don't necessarily dislike any of these songs, i do commend him for trying something different than what he normally does. i think it's more i'm not used to these sort of things from him. i can however see some of these songs grow on me.
pacific sun, sound without a name- should've left them as they were. these remixes/remakes don't do the originals any justice
symphonic- the song that i probably like the most on the album. the operatic vocals will take some getting used to, but somehow all the quirkiness in this track fit in just right.
silver water- after all these years, why the hell is this track on here? since DS was just the remixer, have Nysse, Hinton & Pascale been credited on the album for this track?
amigos, sorry- these tracks just need to die already lol
overall, the album is pretty decent. the overall problem i have with it is that much of it sounds unoriginal. i keep hearing a bunch of riffs and melodies that i've heard before in not just hardcore, but many trance and house songs as well. i might consider buying this later on, on ebay when i can get a copy for $10USD or less ;)

Sounds good. Bassline Road is already out. Quality tune and something different. If a Hardcore DJ ever makes it in the dj top 100 again. Will probably be Darren Styles.

No point in getting it with the odd old choon on it.
Vince Nysse & NJ Hinton Silver Water a four year old track on a upcoming new album.

Re-Con does! And I think S3rl and Technikore do that too, am I right? Wasn't Sonic Vox, the vocalist in most of Jamie Ritmen's tracks, Ritmen himself? Chwyhnny sings her own songs as well. I'm not saying that DS isn't unique, to me every producer is in a certain way.
One thing is for sure, the fact that so many people aspire to be like Styles and emulate his sound takes nothing away from the man's merit. If anything, it just goes to show how much he brings to the genre.
Exactly! Yes those guys sing some of their own tracks but nowadays almost every DS track has his own vocals in it, not to mention the sole reason he is so popular is down to his own vocals.
He's responsible for bringing so many new ravers to the scene, and generally keeping it alive. People just don't like to admit this because they don't like how 'mainstream' is, but someone in the scene has gotta do their bit for commercialism or else hardcore could have quite easily disappeared into a black hole by now.
I will openly say I am not a huge fan of his but he has done loads of great stuff and even the stuff I don't like reeks of high-quality production. He deserves every bit of the fame he has gained because he is talented and has earned it.
I think we should be saying "good on you for making it big as a hardcore producer" rather than slagging him off.
Most sensible post out of the whole thread. The chart positions Styles' reaches are insane for this genre.
I'd love to have a beer with the guy and chat to him about the whole love/hate styles opinion divide. Then I'd probably get on my knees and suck him off for making such an INSANE album. This album is absolutely fantastic. I was excited from the moment someone posted the Breathe Again YouTube link on here a few months before the album was out. From that clip, I knew that the album would be good. I think he's put a lot of effort into trying new things and styles, and whether some people think he's failed, I think he deserves credit for that endeavour at least. Good lad Darren.
As for the arguement about him being unique - I think that with so many new artists and new download labels around these days, operating in a relatively small genre - it's going to be difficult to sound unique or original. That aside, I don't think I've read anything from him pointing to him proclaiming to be unique. Bit of a silly debate.
Oh, and one more thing - producers singing on their own tracks, check this out. A tune from Cat Like Thief's SoundCloud page. LOVE IT.

He's only unique in being less unique than anyone else. Everyone seems to have their own style. Darren Styles hardcore is so generic and boring, he earns uniqueness out of only that.
This is a bit contradictory because I just said in the post before that I think this is a silly arguement, but I'm going to raise one point for the Pro Unique Team. Symphonic. Now, I hope my lack of research on the subject matter doesn't make me look like a plank here, but I don't recall hearing any opera-style vocals in hardcore. The fact that he tried it, and the fact that it's a fcuking good tune speaks volumes of the guy. Boring and generic - don't thinkg so mate.

I contest this, allot of freeform has opera singing in it, and its been done long before styles provisionally joined the wagon.
