Progressive rock is by far the best form of rock music, i've mentioned it here before but no fans really so this is somewhat surprising.

Once you've heard Pink Floyd.........There's no reason for you to listen to any other rock.
Comfortably Numb was God. Especially that solo

"i think it's basically the daddy of all music.. Ridiculously good"
"Progressive rock is by far the best form of rock music"
"Once you've heard Pink Floyd.........There's no reason for you to listen to any other rock"
^^ as everything I think it all comes down to each one's taste.
Personally, I dont like progressive rock, of course, Pink floyd made an huge and undeniable contribution to rock history, and some of their songs are indeed masterpieces, but others are just plain boring, imo.
I guess one should have lived in those days in order to really apreciatte that music, but at least to me, most psichodelic rock just doesn't do it for me.
and about Dream Theather, I think they abuse of their technical skills, I feel I'm just listening someone showing off, I mean, yeah sure, you can play the guitar, but I don't need to hear you playing for 15 minutes one song so you can prove it.
I'd rather a 60 seconds song from the ramones, than a hour song of Dream Theather.

In fact, I feel the same about certain "classical" music:
The fact that you went for 10 years to the best conservatory of Music in the world, doesn't make you any better musician than the old Johnny B. Goode, "Who never ever learned to read or write so well, But he could play the guitar just like a ringing a bell"

Well it was never meant to be more than our opinions, it's not a problem that you or even the rest of the world dissagrees. The topic exists for those who do like it to discuss it :P To me it is the best form of rock, but i don't think it has to be true for anyone else. Some of it i have no interest in at all.
Anyway, regarding artists, you should all at least check out Genesis as they invented Prog Rock to begin with and brought the use of synths heavily into this kind of music. I have a feeling though that pretty much no one here is a fan of any of their stuff, it is very different from Pink Floyd etc...and when it comes to the Peter Gabriel era their music is much less accessible to the average person. For a good mixture of prog and melody you should check out the album 'A Trick Of The Tail'. Infact i'll just post some links (starting with the most melodic):

Nursery Cryme lol, surprising. Of the Peter Gabriel era stuff my favourite is Selling England By The Pound. Although the only non-Gabriel album i listen to is A Trick Of The Tail anyway. I never would have though of Supertramp as Prog Rock but either way good stuff. Found this tune the other day, its my favourite so far: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk9sJyVlGOw Other than that, Breakfast In America etc (the song, abit of an obvious one), good tunes.

even in the quietest moments is just a fantastic album altogether really.. some very good stuff on it! and yeah selling england by the pound is fantastic.. i must admit i do have a softspot for duke and the more commercial (yet still not commercial :P) genesis, but i havn't listened to many of their albums really.. I take it you don't seeing as you listen to basically the only non-gabriel progressive album they did after gabriel haha
anyway, if you are beginning to like supertramp check out "crisis? what crisis?", some gooduns on that as well...
and yes, nursery cryme is rather surprising as an album in general really haha

I used to listen to Supertramp as a kid actually as my dad has Crime Of The Century, Crisit? What Crisit? and Even In The Quietest Moments on vinyl but there is a load of tunes that i don't remember from the first time round, hence rediscovering that one tune i mentioned, infact it's not one i would have listened to back then anyway. The second of the 2 i listened to by far the most and upon checking out all songs on all 3 it is quite easily the best it seems in terms of consistency. Of the later Genesis stuff i can't fault Duke being a good album although it's not something i listen to specifically (again, used to when i was a kid for the same reason as the other stuff). It is definately the best of their later stuff by far.

ah sorry mate haha i probably sounded quite condescending then :S
I need to have another listen of all the albums, i'm thinking of getting a turntable seeing as my dad has every one of the genesis albums and just sitting down with some headphones (as my dad did).. is there much of a difference in the sound quality? from what i've experienced i prefer vinyl.. but i know bugger all
i'm in the process of getting my mates into it as well seeing as i look a bit of a spud at the moment listening to this sort of thing at 17 when everyone else is listening to lady winnit and the like..
do you know of any other artists i should look into?

I personally much prefer listening straight from vinyl. It's not a question of quality really, it's just different and i personally much prefer to listen to stuff from vinyl if possible. I prefer analogue in general though, sounds alot 'nicer'.
Anyway as for artists to check out i'd have to think about it but off the top off the top of my head the other prog stuff i really like is Steve Hackett's first solo album. Here is a link to start you off :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XiVMrAs6H0&fmt=18. It's almost a genesis album to be honest considering it has features both Phill Collins (drums and vocals) and Mike Rutherford (bass). If you listen to it then it (the album) will become rapidly obvious what his influence on Genesis was. I think Nursery Cryme was the first album with Steve Hackett in and the band and you can definately tell. I also really like this tune by him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQaGCNGgfe4 Not a big fan of the first few minutes but i really like the long guitar section that starts after about 3 minutes. Again though certainly don't expect you to like this stuff! It's really quite random and it's something you either love or hate it think, i've certainly never met anyone that likes it anyway. Edit: Oh yeah and you didn't sound condescending. Didn't help the way i said it lol.
