Cubase, Logic if you're on MAC, FL8...

No it's not. It does have a 30 day unlimited trial but it's not worth it. It doesn't match up to the likes of Studio One, Sonar, FL and no doubt Cubase.

Don't bother with trials mate, buy yourself a copy of Cubase 5, it's actually quite cheap considering it's industry standard for Electronic Dance music and a very good program that'll last for the unforeseeable future!

Cubase, FL, Logic, these are the main players, you will get good results from all of them, its just preference on how you like to work.
FL do free trials, so before you splash out $200 or so, it may be worth having a trial of that and if you dont like the interface.......buy cubase

Ah really. Must have misunderstood what I was reading about it.
Yeah I can vouch for Cubase 5, amazing bit of software. You will need a decent sampler to go with it though. Grab the full educational copy of Cubase 5 and you'll be laughing mate.

QFT
Educational copy in Canada is 300$ (160 quid?) and has ALL the features
Miles above FL feature-wise (and IMO, workflow wise too, but that's subjective)
As AW says, you definitely need a good sampler, and you have to know how to set it up. That's the "hard" part about Cubase. Everything else is easy.

pft you cannot place FL in same leauge as logic, cubase even ableton they are way above FL when you look at what you get in package logic without a doubt has best sound engine and comes with best plugins arround cubase handels audio great and comes with afew decent "USABLE" plugins . ableton has good workflow and is grat for getting into that whole live perfomance thing yes logic comes mainstage as well as soundtrack pro so if i were you get a macbook pro and logic you will not regret it ;)

Get a desktop surely. No point in having a laptop for producing if you can avoid it.
From what I've read there is no difference between the Logic, Cubase and FL sound engines. Reason's is a bit behind the others or at least it was, not sure if they've changed that. However Logic is shipped with arguably the best synths and effect units and FL Studios are pretty damn wank. Tends to be these factors that make a difference in the final sound with a particular DAW.
I have Cubase and FL and I don't hear any difference when using the same sample or making an identical sound in both programs. While a lot of them still aren't great the effects units Cubase ships with shit on the FL ones though.
If you're running a PC though there is no end of fantastic plugins available that easily match the ones shipped with logic. Swings and roundabouts. Just go with what you feel comfortable with.

plenty of wicked plugins on a mac too my friend
I went from producing on a PC with FL to producing on a PC with Cubase 4 to producing on a Mac with Cubase 5
And producing on a Mac laptop is ****ing amazing (trackpad gestures are SO good for Cubase).

Yes mate, I'm sure you can. Was just saying you can get as good a sound with a PC set up as you can with a mac/logic one. :)
Fook using a laptop to do a desktops work though. I'm sure it would do the trick but why use a donkey to pull your carriage when you could use a horse! ;p Getting a desktop will always give you more bang for your buck and they're far less prone to overheating.
