I recently read a interview from gammer on www.bornhardcore.com and he mentioned it took him some time to learn the formula for hardcore. what exactly does he mean? can anyone explain this?

its a well kept secret, so don't tell anybody, but the formula for hardcore is.....
fn = sqrt(k / m)
where sqrt is the square root, and all the other symbols have their usual meanings. Ideally your looking for an fn value of about 60-70 for really thumping bass, and you would alter k and m to suit.
Of course, you mustn't forget that c = 2 * zeta * sqrt(k * m)
and obviously m = ro * x * y * t

^^^^^ obviously not :-/
Oh, as an added tip, because your looking for quite a low value of fn, you can increase the mass, m, to get a really heavy track, and also reduce the stiffness, k, making for a more relaxed atmosphere. Obviously there comes a point where you have a trade off between mass and stiffness, but then production wouldn't be such a black art if I were to give away secrets of mass choice

yeah but what does mass and stiffness mean in simpler terms?

mass = weight in kilograms, and stiffness is basically a measure of how much the system will move for a given force. Usually all design calculations are based on the simplification that the stiffness is linear, although more complex and accurate systems allow for non-linearities within the system. This is usually only necessary for tunes that force the speakers to displace through a distance greater than the thickness of the speaker cone.
Its quite simple really

and Underloop, I thought you had to take the first derivative of that? =P

hmmm, an interesting point there Brian, and perhaps one I should have mentioned. The first derivative should give the gradient of the tension building function. What you are aiming to achieve is an initially smooth and slowly increasing tension. Some producers introduce a step-function into the equation somewhere along the way, so that as the tension builds there will be a sudden jump (usually created by everything dropping from the breakdown, and then all the drums and a big synth riff coming in bang in your face). When I have a bit more time I will try and put some graphs up so people can see exactly what I mean.
One other thing I should perhaps have mentioned is that m is a function of time, as is k, so these parameters can vary as the track progresses, and the derivative mentioned above is the derivative with respect to time.
