after 6 months of thinking and looking, i'm definately going to get my first set of decks just after Christmas. My Birthday is 10 days after christmas so i'll have about £300 if i ask for money off nearly everybody. I was thinking about getting the Str8-100's but they're too expensive and to be honest, i've never even put a vinyl onto a turntable before so i'll get a cheaper and worse one to learn on lol. so i went into this shop yesterday and they had a second hand set of Stanton str8-50's for £120... but they were scratched to sh*t and the end of the arm had tape over it? lol, so i'm deffo not getting those. then i saw some st8-60's that looked in good condition but weren't yet for sale so i didnt know the price. oh, and there were some Gemini's there but i cant remember what they were exactly, or the price!
would str8-60's be ok? i mean, i know these will be my first decks, but i am dead serious about DJ'ing and i dont want to be getting another set of decks just after i've learned how to mix etc on one set... being 16 by the time i get some, i wont have enough money to buy more!
or should i search for some str8-80's somewhere? thanks

Get what you can afford for now, as long as they're direct drive turntables. Being 16 I'd also say get a job ASAP. Then you'll have the money(and my god you'll need it) to buy records and eventually upgrade your equipment.
I bought the Numark starter set which was pretty cheap, and that lasted me about 6 months until I got a healthy credit line, realized I loved doing the DJ thing and got some Techs. Its good to start on those lower level decks I think though. Some will say just buy techs, but I definitely appreciated the difference when I got the Techs and its helped me be able to jump from table to table with no real problems.
With very little cash, get what you can afford and take care of your decks and the mixer, and good luck

My advice, now that I can give it considering I've finally done it, is go eBay. Just check your pics and feedbacks carefully. My entire set is all off of ebay for under $250. All works fine.

why wouldn't you buy decks off ebay? Is it because they r 2nd hand or coz u have no way of knowing they will work fine?

It's cause you would have no idea if they work proper. If your gonna buy 2nd hand decks make sure you get 2 of the same record and play them at the same pitch ( To check 1 doesnt run faster than the other ).

I saw a pair of MK2's on Ebay that started out at $403 and were sold for $560. I think that's a pretty good deal for 2 Technics in almost mint condition.
Anyways Chris, why don't you just save a little more and then just get the Str8-100's?? Oh!! Since your turning 16, why don't you ask your dad or mum...for a Sweet 16/Huge PARTY or something? So that you can get more money from your relatives and friends? Do guys even have "Sweet 16" parties or big parties?? LoL! If not, get a summer job at a local place...
Oh and the site that I checked out and told you about, has the Str8-60's for cheaper than the Str8-100's...which is a bit odd I think. But yeah. I think I should go recheck it. Yeah, the Str8-60's cost $325(about £174.68) and the Str8-100's cost $295(about £158.52). That's like a £16 difference!
Well Good Luck!!

because the str8-100's are about £400! and thats without a mixer... i might just save to get the 80's and have them for a few years until i get a real job. but yea, i'm gonna get a job when i finish school, and i'll do that until i go to college.
we do have big parties when we want, but i've never heard of a "sweet 16 one" besides, my mum is a single parent and really cant afford that lol!
(Erica, i haven't checked that link but i'm thinking the 60's are a pair with or without a mixer, and the 100's are single?)
EDIT: Spelled "parent" wrong

No...
Just ONE Str8-60 for £174.68
and ONE Str8-100 for £158.52
Yeah, so everything's single.
Oh, and Str8-80's are £107.32/ea.
Whatever, this pounds thing is started to confusing me.LoL Your just going to have to check out the site for yourself. And if you look around, you'll probably be able to find them from cheaper...

A "Sweet 16" Party is a huge party you have when your turn 16...if you want/can. It's like prom. lol. You get all dressed up and have a huge party and have lots of fun with all your friends. And you get presents and stuff too, cause well...it's your birthday. LoL.

i think u've got the right idea mate, just get the best set of direct drives you can afford.
i got some dirt-cheap belts and although i've got no complaints about value for money after 5/6 months i want a more solid feeling set-up that can be scratched on etc.
starting at the lower end of the scale will help you learn and make you appreciate the good kit when you eventually get it.
i'd also say be very careful with getting second hand decks. without a doubt you can get some wicked deals but how do you know the ebay advert "bought for christmas and decided DJ'ing wasnt for me" doesnt mean "caned the f**k out of them for a few months then had to sell them for some quick cash" haha
see if you can buy them from someone who deals in decks, or from someone who'll let you view them, prove date of purchase etc.
anyways, this is turning into an essay so i'll just say go for it mate, use you're best judgement and get mixing!

YOU HAVE STR8-30'S!? well if you have them, and you've been mixing and stuff perfectly fine with them... then i'll be fine with str8-50's or 60's then...! Cheerz Smilee, you've unintentionally helped me! lol

that is a real pisser when someone tweaks the speed, dont ever let anyone crack open your tables... *maybe* tweak the break, but def not the speed.

If your really serious obout djing you should deffently get a top of the range deck cause you're only going to want to have them after your passed your beginner stage. I have Numark TTX-1s and I would deffently recommend them as the best deck around at the moment (and yes I use Techs when I dj out). If the price is a bit to steap then I would recommend second hand Technics of E-bay or something!
