I am new to this scene but i love music i was going to get some decks but i dont know what to go for i dont want to go over the top with price because if i dont get into it then its a waste, i was looking at something in the region of £250 -£300 for the decks and a mixer and headphones, ive seen a starter package on www.decks.co.uk that looks ok its the Gemini XL300 DM950 Package and it contains.

2 x Gemini XL-300 decks

1 x Numark DM-950 mixer

All headphones, slipmats, leads and cartridges

Would this do for just starting out and getting into it ? any comments or suggestions would be great
Thx Rep

for starting to DJ i would say any decks is a good start :)

*edit*i was going to leave the link here, but its not much use after all *edit*

i would say that any decks are good to start off with honestly, you have to start somewhere and i would say 80% of all new djs start with lower standered decks and work they're way up, this way you get to learn to DJ on more than one type of deck. once you get the hang with lower standered ones, you can then move up to higher models :)

I was told not to get a Starter Pak, but I don't know the reason why.

You probably know this already but, don't get belt drives!

generally starter packs are shit in my experence. My mate got a pack (2decks, mixer, headphones) for £149! but to be honest its laughable. I could not mix on em at all. For instance when I gave the record a little push to get it going it sped the whole deck up for about 10 seconds, completely messing up the beatmatching.

Also when adjusting the pitch while BM'ing it took the deck about 20 seconds to catch up to the speed stated on the slider, meaning even simple beatmatching took about 2 minutes insted of the normal 30 seconds or so... and don't think you can touch the platter or spindle to speed up/slow down. any touch at all and the whole thing stops. Totally shite.

Now he wants to upgrade already (had em 6 months) but they have no second hand value, so he's wasted £150 he could have spent on tunes. I started on a second hand set of technics that were in completely mint condition, still in warrenty. I wont ever need to change my decks (hopefully!) but If I want to I can flog em for probably not a whole lot less than I paid for em.

Moral of this story, always buy as good as you possibly can. I'm not saying triquatra's wrong, its just a difference of opinion. I think on really crap decks you'd spend more time battling against the inconsistancies of the deck rather than learing how to mix. Plus if you recon you'll ever want to scratch you'll need direct drives, no doubt about it.

Search on ebay under dj equipment. I see mad bargains on there all the time for all makes of deck/mixer etc.

When I first got into Djing I didnt even thinking of getting a starter pack. I looked and them and thought it was a waste of money and that I should go for decent direct drive decks not shitty belt.

DO NOT GET BELT DRIVE DECKS!!!

I have Numark TT1650's and Numark DM 3000EX mixer. I have had these and they have done be a great job, but I suggest getting better cartridges. The ones you get are fine but If you are looking to record mixes or do sets go with someone others. Numark do quite a few decent cartridges which could cost in the region of £20-£30 each.

Good Luck

PS - Sorry for the Caps

Yeah same here Smilee, everything will be about the CD Decks rather than the turntables.

I might be really considering changing soon.

Though my only worry is when I see tunes on hhc.com shop for example, you cant get them as a CD. This is my only worry.

well Steve-O I dont have a problem with those both at all. I really do find the 1650's are good. But that is my opinion.

Another question : tunes that are released on vinyl, where can you get them on CD?

2x Stanton str830 decks and a Numark :: DM-1050 Mixer for £300
For an extra £30 i could get a Gemini :: PS540i Mixer
What do you think ?

Well i looked on the Stanton site and it says that the str8 series are made for scratching. I dont really want to scratch so do you think i would be better off with something else or not? . "The Stanton STR8 series of turntables are designed specifically for the scratching DJ. " < That got me a bit worried on what to choose ?
I think that i will stick to the gemini decks plus there alot cheaper

Str8-30's are fine :) ..I can scratch and mix fine on them..Torque obviously isnt as good as the other decks...But I dont think I'd waste money and move up when you can mix fine on them. :)
