about the software, it would be a good idea to atleast address the more high end programs like cubase, reason, ect just so people know what is out there.
and headphones the sony mdr-v700, they're comfy and sturdy, the cups swivel to whatever situation and the sound is top notch, i proably see like 90% of djs using these headphones

As far as music tools go I can help. But I haven't used Pro Tools so maybe someone can fill that void.
Here's another possible Q:
What kind of soundcard should I have for producing?
A: A comprehensive list of soundcards suited towards Professional sound recording can be found at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~rongonz/home_rec/soundcard.html Some of the cheapest Pro cards that are usually recommended are the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 ($350 US) and the Terratec EWX 24/96 ($250 US). ----- http://www.soundclick.com/nrxic ^^^Mah Chewnz "From the mean streets of Calgary, Alberta, Canada!" - Jericho

i just got the techs 1200 mk5's, they're damn nice, oh, it it might be worth distinguishing that 1200/1210 are the same except 1210 are black casing (from my understanding). making a comment about needles would probably be appropriate while we're on the topic. stanton 505's are good to start up on, but shure and ortofon for the top of the line.

I used them twice and found them to jump all over the place when you are trying to que a record.

I've got the 500s at home, and when I first started learning to spin they jumped like crazy when cueing up, but I think that was more down to me being heavy handed. Now I have no problems. Jumps a bit if I try to scratch, but the 500s aren't really scratch carts anyway.

Two mixers that I love.
1. DJM 600
2. RM3
I've never used the Rane Empath before, but heard it was excellent.

Headphones Sony all the way.. excellent warranty, great for home/studio and club use.

Ok, added a few more, I can only add if you people keep giving me suggestions :)
I'm having trouble with the more subjective issues of carts and so on.. when it comes to those it seems a bit more personal choice.. so I'll wait until I get lots of different choices before I put something in there :)
Sorry it got so behind.. coursework of final school year >.<
