I've just gone through a significant PC upgrade and the difference is AWESOME! Not one crackle, not one audio drop out! Seriously, with the older setup my projects had to be fairly minimal (had to constantly freeze tracks as well) but now I can have a truckload of instances of Absynth 5, Kontakt 4, and Massive, with lots of automation and an absurd amount of effects and the total CPU usage only maxes out around 27%!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I was completely expecting this too. I'm just so grateful to no longer have to deal with trying to produce with a metaphorical ball and chain around my ankle!!

Specifications if anyone is curious:
- Intel Core i5 3570 processor
- Samsung MV-3V4G3D/US 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 memory
- Intel DQ77MK motherboard
- M-Audio Delta 1010LT PCI audio interface
- Nvidia GTX 285 graphics card (will eventually be replaced with an AMD FirePro V4900 when I get the money)
- Noctua NH-L12 processor cooler
- XClio GreatPower 700W power supply (will eventually be replaced with a Silverstone ST45SF-G)

that 700W power supply is good for future upgrades, because of what the other stuff takes, it wont use up more than maybe 500W. I presume you're going to use atleast Windows 7 64bit for the memory?

I'm going to sell off the 700W PSU since it's overkill, especially for this new build. Additionally the ST45SF-G is fully modular, unlike my current one, so cable management will be a lot easier.

I'm on Win7 Professional x64. I'd have to be off my rocker to use an x86 version. :P

I know exactly how you feel. I myself am enjoying a brand new laptop: intel core i5-3210m to replace the old home pc which was about to be 9 years old this December. hah! Running Cubase AI 6 alongside Reason 4 through re-wire on Windows 8; more than enough to sketch at home. love the hibernate mode on this, too. it's amazingly fast at restarting.

EDIT: ...the topic made me think you were rollin'. :P

MY laptop struggled with production so much it made it unbearable to do. I put up with the stutter and lack of power to run my DAW and VST's but I've had enough now. Bloody thing can go to hell when Im done with uni.

I find it odd that anyone can have trouble with producing in this day and age. How many plugins are people using lol? The worst modern computers are more than fast enough.

yeah. core i3 seemed to be an option even compared to what I was using (single core 2.6ghz procesor with 1 Gb Ram). It took about 2-3 minutes for windows to start up, and another 2-3 minutes to start up a cubase template. Still, I got some pretty good use out of that ol' pc. I remember the joys of being able to run cubase sx on it in contrast to the one prior to that (single core celeron 466Mhz procesor - or something along those lines).

Since I have a small SSD drive (90GiB), and because it restarts ridiciously fast, I've turned off both Hibernating mode (I have ALWAYS had problems with that, ever since Windows XP and I have always built my own computers) and lowered the virtual(cache) memory. Waiting only 20 seconds to start from scratch instead of 5-10 seconds from hibernating isn't something I care about. Also, since I run a FTP for my website, I can't exactly turn off my computer every now and then :P

Im using an i5 laptop with 6GB of DDR3 RAM.

It may be because I layer so many VST's and synths up and pack loads of mixer VST's on each of them. I'm rigorous with my production and my PC does struggle with it :/

With my old system I did try to limit how many effects/instruments I used (as well as choosing less resource-intensive ones). I also bounced down where possible. Like I said in my first post, I tried to keep them fairly minimal. It just annoyed me so much when I would run into performance issues; I would have to put my creative process on hold while I tweaked other parts of the project so that I could continue.

Overview

The GTX 285 didn't fit so I borrowed an HD 4850 off a relative. Only problem is that it's loud, at least compared to the rest of the system which is very quiet. Cabling is a complete mess at the moment, but I intend to buy some cable management stuff in the future. I also plan on replacing the internal 3.5" hard drive (beneath the SSD) with two 2.5" drives (one HDD, one SSD) via an adapter in the future.

Wait, what? The processor and graphics card together consume only 187 watts. When I had the older, larger case that the GTX 285 fit in, it was 260W combined. Considering other components as well, 450W is enough for me, and the power supply in question definitely isn't a low-end $10 fireworks container.

Not sure why USB 3.0 makes you think that it's underpowered. :s

really? only 187? I need to get some tools so I can see how much I actually use, or my 600W is underused :P

USB 3 uses up more power than USB 2, thats why I was wondering.
