i just read it - and i agree with you!, im not sure if the whole punk thing called it hardcore back then though, i think calling punk "hardcore" is a new thing from the last decade and half!

just got caught up answering PJI back! :)

I would say the vast majority of people, probably even the dutch refer to gabber as gabber
but nevertheless, some people do call gabber "hardcore", but you cant really have "Hardcore" "Hardcore" "Hardcore" Hardcore" as Genres at the top, from what i gather (as im not a massive listener to '92 130bpm hardcore) the genre as a whole is becoming better known under "hardcore breaks" these days

*edit*

Project, i see where you are coming from but you'll have to be a little clearer on other things
if gabber = hardcore
what does our hardcore =?
what do you call (what we call) "hardcore"..even the stuff out of holland like newer stuff by nakatomi or mental theo

how would you lay out the genre map to please everyone?

hide the mistake you see ;)

unfiltered + i gave it head:

BACK ON TOPIC
I think you should also include a section on 8 bit songs and chip music. it also has influence on normal hardcore.

Also dubstep. the wobble bass is now present in many songs.

dutch version of hardcore these days is just the plain hardcore to me.. also refered to as mainstream but i'd say thats a nickname due to beeing commercial. the stuff like nakatomi would be considered (early) rave.

the thing that even some dutch call 'gabber' would be something like 'gabberpiet'... which i consider more like a weak jerk off from rave... kiddyhouse or something.. or f*cked up dance... that basicly fits in the same genre where you wanna put twinkle twinkle lil star as (to me) its just avin a laugh bout the hardcore genre.

hell i know hardcore isnt originally dutch... it came from the techno scene in detroit. everyone with some spare time can look up those facts :P (@dante btw ;) ) but once it reached the netherlands nd we made it in something rougher nd all.. well then you got what we now call 'early rave'. thats where the word gabber got born as a way to say friend or buddy... as the hiphoppers would say 'homies' or whatever.. :p i personally think the whole thing started beeing called gabber as americans refer hardcore to rock and europeans usually to fast and hard dance music... so as we called eachother gabbers.. its gabber music.. genre then..hmm.. must be gabber. call it techno .. call it gabber.. both have a link to hardcore... but hardcore is hardcore nd nothing else :)

ofcourse you get lotsa styles mixed up with eachother nd countries start to develop their own version.. uk hardcore for example.. i would just call it happy hardcore really, frenchcore... says enough.. which looks like industrial hardcore.. which is basicly hardcore with weird noises because they found it funny to mix minimal/industrial music into it.. (gotta love the industrial hardcore though.. hence ma artist name lol )

and so on and so on... guess this sums the whole discussion up :P questions? remarks?

interesting stuff - I didnt know about the origins of the actual word gabber

thankyou for all that info - but that doesnt really help as to how to lay out the genre map...:P

at this point, perhaps it would make sense to make 2?
a fully blown genre map to go with this one (this one being the watered down one)
and making one that is actually to compete with ishkars...

perhaps the option to switch between "Beginner" and "Advanced" modes

wosnt my idea to call it hardcore xD i guess if you agree with me you could set it like.. hardcore.. then you get the overall info where it started to be called hardcore.. which was in the netherlands. then as you have some styles on the side.. you go into the subgenre's (rave/uk/freeform.... whatever you think up)

nd yer.. that beginner/advanced could be cool :)
