As a complete (and I mean a complete) rookie to the world of DJing I was wondering what mixer anyone could suggest for someone starting out - simply because it's me b-day in a few weeks and have decided to ask for a set of decks+mixer, so any suggestions appreciated (but if poss keep the jargon to a minimum cos the number of brain cells I have can be counted on one hand)
p.s. sorry if this topic is ancient and annoying to anyone but it's new to me

I have a BEHRINGER DJX700, I love this mixer. It's 200$ and its very good quality for its price. Other people way not love behringer mixers but I have had nothing but pure goodness. It's got dope effects and 5 channels.

I'll second that regarding Behringer mixers.... I have one of the older, more basic models (can't remember the modell off the top of my head) and it is excellent value for money! the X-Fader isn't the smoothest, but a drop of WD40 soon sorts that out. The sound is sweet, and the monitoring section is pretty top notch too. Take a serious look at these if you are just starting out!

If you want to get a quality mixer and ent worried bout having a mic or all the extras then have a look at the Vestax pmc 06. Thatl keep you going for a few years yet. If you do however want the extra bitss on there for the same price then haveing a look at behringer or gemini can be an alternative. Though i think youl be looking for a new mixer within a year or 2 :)
Thats what i think anyways. If youv got loads to spend then go for one of the better models from vestax, pioneer or rane but im assuming that you havnt got that much to spend lol ( 600 quid )

Cheers for the info, I would just like to ask why ppl you know don't like it - because to be honest I know so little that any info would help.
And frank - £600 is a just an itty bitty bit out of my price range

Id get something from the Ecler Smacpro series (Ive got a 40 myself). Top build quality (Ive never heard anyone say a bad word about em). Although those punch buttons above the cross fader look in pictures like theyd get in the way, you dont even notice theyre there half the time (that was the only thing I was really unsure about when getting mine).

Cheers, but to be honest the 40 is a little out of my price range, to be honest I really can't spend over 200 (to be honest I don;t have any money to spend, but what the hell......).

Behringers are awful mixers. I sued to ahve to plaay out on one at this bar I was resident at. It was dire. You get alot for your money but all the components were really cheap. For the day the bar got it till the day I quit it had lost 3 fader knobs and the effects end and return packed in (only used twice). For £200 you can get a really good mixer. You don't need bells and whistled just 2 channels, full eqs and a hard wearing crossfader with a nice action.
THe Ecler Smac Pro 20 is £199 at www.djgear.co.u. But shop around and play the shops off each other. Get a list of exactly what you want to buy and ring every shop in the back DJ mag. THey virtually all have price promises and could save you alot of money.
TO be fair £200 on your first mixer is alot of money.
Gemini PS626i is a bargain at £99. I've used it and found it to be very capable. Alot of clubs use this mixer too. Then the money you save can be used on better decks. Decks really should be the priority in your set up.

What is your total budget for your set up and I'll give you a suggestion. Remember you're gonna need carts and headphones too. You may be able to balg those for free if you by a package that the shop themselves have put together. THe problem with those packages is that sometimes there is one part that lets it down.

Hell yeah. I got free slipmatts with my mixer cos I told em Id buy it from them if they chucked em in rather than get it somewhere else for the same price, I got my carts for about 20% off cos I asked them to better the price of another place.

THis one does. THe one we had at Merricks took a right kicking. I don't know why it's so cheap but I'd snap it up personally. You wont get better for £99.
The crossfaders on these do have a short life though. But if you're starting out you may as well just use the channel faders.

well i had a ps540 i and it lasted about 6 months. Th x-fader indeed being the big problem that lasted about 2 months lol

To be honest, I didn't really want to spend much over £600, but at the moment all I have is £300 (and even that I don't really have), and so at the moment all i can afford is one of those 'dj in a box' jobbies, which I don't really want to have to get because I have heard major bad things about them - but to be honest I don't really want a completely pro set up cos - 1) I have no experience whatsoever and don't want to end up completely confused (which easily happens) and 2) because I only ever see it being a hobby, not a profession.
