I gotta disagree with ya on this one luke, around 96' is when all the best tunes were coming out... better tunes = (suprise suprise) better mixes (assuming they're being played by a good dj) Okay, sometimes mcs would, and still do **** up the mix but a lot of the time they just make it better, take storm for example.
if you like tapes with no mcs on them you should try to get a hold of 'edge' tapes - they're mixed in a studio.

MC'in on tapes is good - so long as it's good MC'in - and the level on the mic doesn't over ride the actual tunes. But I really hate MC's that think that THEY are there to entertain the crowd and not the DJ. MC's that don't shut up can be really annoying - especially when they chat at the same time over vocals - and this is especially annoying on tapes. CD's are very different thou - they seem to lack the enthusiasm when they are in a studio. But I would rather have an MC-less CD rather than someone sounding like they didn't really want to be there. I have heard one exception on a CD and that is Mickey Finn & GQ on Dreamscape the Vision vol 1. GQ really makes it sound like it was recorded from an event....
