Does anyone know what synths where used to create the older freeform / hardcore bass sounds ?
I was thinking of purchasing hardware
I have tried almost every VST going. But the older freeform sounds alot different than now and I don't think it's the style. I think it's more to do with the equipment.
The kind of sound I am wanting to go for is the Sharkey, Kevin Energy, bonkers, ect..
There is a video on youtube of Sharkey with a Yamaha CS2x
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHhSNM3RcCo Thanks in advance

I think a great deal to do with production styles and tecniques had/has to do with the limitations of the tools of that specific era and how people just got what they could out of those tools.
There's a bunch of retro synth emulations which should cover the era you want to re-create.
check out http://www.pluginboutique.com/ seen a few roland emulations on there.

neither here nor there, but that's Jon Doe's Yamaha CS1x, not a 2x ;)
I bought a 2x in the hopes that it would have the same soundfonts on it, it didn't. or at least it was missing the one I was after...being the same as used at the start of/throughout 'Stretch and Vern - Moonmans Theme (that tinkley spaceship/ufo/space pad).
Anywayyyyyyyyyyyyy, I had a chat with UFO a while back asking him what toolage 'im and 'ixxy used to make their Bonkers 7 tracks, now I know this isn't exactly what you're after, but it might help in opening up what gear was being used back in 99.
nord lead
novation supernova
roland 1080
akai s6000
waldorf microwave xt
and a korg triton
Best bet imo is to wack a freeform track you want to emulate into your preffered DAW and then try to recreate it as accurately as possible. Most of the standard VSTs can pull off the sounds your after, V-station and Sylenth1 are very good for this kind of recreation work, I find.
I get where you are coming from as I feel the same, VSTs seem too clean and polished, which in the end also comes down to us fogies being used to hearing it on vinyl with older mastering where they didn't seem to excite the music and make it PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE so much.

I like the face-punching!
Still, there's some element of artisan romance in acquiring old hardware in this day and age just to create a specific sound.

What DAW are you? You can get that old freeform bass sound with Logic's ESM and the overdrive plugin. A lot of freeform producers were/are on Logic.
If not on Logic, think LPF and saw-y synths with movement (but bounce) to recreate the analogue-ness. Basically avoid super clean stuff like Serum, Massive etc. Prob could get good results with Sylenth and The Drop.

There's not alot you cant do with FM8 massive etc and filters, most freeform stuff is in the filters, yes outboard is fun but not always neccesary, also there's alot of "emulation" vsts that will do what you want.
Sylenth will make freeform noise if you poke it enough.
Bandreject with an lfo set 1/8 1/4 on massive with some overdrive will make that rolling sound, so will two chopped offbeat notes through a pitched down donk layered over it.
Hope that helps 😊

Thanks everyone
Would an access virus TI do ? I've tried creating the old freeform style on there but cant quite seem to get it right.
