While the US has a Republican nominee that's nothing but a bloated, loudmouth traffic cone that spends most of his time offending various ethnic groups and asking for a ban of all Muslim immigrants to this country, London has voted in a Muslim mayor, a first for a western city. Props to Londoners for looking past the smear job the conservative's campaign tried to do by insinuating that Khan had terrorist ties.

Please stop all of your "I hate conservatives" posting. It contributes nothing and it is annoying.

According to a 2011 London census Muslims only account for about 12% of the population. I'm sure that's increased since then, but not by a dramatic rate I'm sure. Either way there's an overwhelming majority of the London population that isn't Muslim and there were clearly supporters from various, or even non-religious backgrounds that backed him up.
Also the voter turnout was at about 45%, which is rather low I think, but perhaps normal over there. Not sure what the turnout was for the last mayoral election where I live. So perhaps Khan did benefit by an increase in minority voting. But when there's a minority running for office, here in the US there's an increase in non-minority vote as well to help decrease the chance of a win for a minority candidate. It happened here in Houston this past fall, and the mayor won in a run-off election by less than 2% of the popular vote.

stop?
And you know what contributes nothing? Complaining about how something contributes nothing and it annoys you without offering an opinion on the subject at hand.

that would never happen in the uk, no body bothers voting for anything, its a middleclass country all set up for the middleclass, even the benefit system
so the way it rolls, you stay unemployed until you get a full time job, get a part time job and tell the housing office about the first job that earns you more then unemployement benefit, do over time and get another job and don`t tell the housing office or you will never be better of then you are on unemployment benefit until you are working over 30 hours a week
work as close as you can so you earn 11k a year so its all tax free, working an extra 12 hours a week for minimum wage of 15k -20% tax aint worth the extra 1k a year
only bother if your full time job earn 18k a year

Interesting to see what this means for London.
Simply put, there was no alternative. A politician that bases a campaign on fear is always going to look weak, and will always fail. Miliband looked weak when he ran for Labour, Cameron looked weak when his Syria vote fell to a 'No', and he looks weak now as he tries to promote staying in Europe.
The rhetoric holds more meaning than the direct points. A positive rhetoric inspires, a negative one instills unease and no confidence. That's why there's a very real threat of UK leaving the EU, and that's why Khan won.
Khan said London will be better. Goldsmith said London will be worse. Khan won.
Cameron said the UK will be weaker. Johnson says the UK will be stronger. ?
Trump said the US will be great again. Cruz said Trump will ruin the US. Trump won.
Obama said US can change for the better. Romney said US change to how it was. Obama won.
It's interesting to see how it sways each time. More to it than that, but it's a massive factor.

Not really a smear job, the connections weren't invented. If Goldsmith had similar connections to Nationalists, a far more innocuous group of people, then you can be sure the Left would have used it against him.

Why is it always about the religion an individual follows?
