My current faves are:

Native Instruments FM7
Pro 53
Phatmatik Pro (although I have get to purchase this, I have used my mate's)
Absynth is also quite nice for getting some unusual sounds

I am also considering getting the Novation V-Station as the sounds on that are really Fat!! I havn't tried it out yet, but I've tried the K-Station which is it's hardware equivalent. Just waiting till I've got £149 to spare then it shall be mine

I also use the synths that come with Logic.... with a bit of tweaking, and a whole bunch of effects they can sound fantastic!

Also, if you fancy building your own synths then Reaktor is one hot package.

Not too sure on the freeware side of things, except if you want an extremely nice 303 emulator, Tau is one hot piece of code!! Its the only thing I use if I want a 303 sound

Pro 53 is definately my fav synth by a long way :) FM7 is also really good too :)
You should try Triangle, for good acid sounds, you can downlaod it free from these links:

http://www.rgcaudio.com/downloads/T2VST101.exe - VSTi Version
http://www.rgcaudio.com/downloads/T2DXi102.exe DXi Version

TBL Bassline is also very good for TB303 sounds (best i have come across, apart from Rebirth)
Claw is anorher good synth for acid sounds. Which you can get free from here:

Bucky:

I've never had that problem with VSTis before. I used to sometimes get it when using my hardware synths though. Out of interest, what sequencer are you using?

Check all teh midi events you've got going on towards teh start of the song.... maybe there are some program change messages. If so then just delete these and it should be fine. If not, then try putting some program/bank changes in, referencing the program you actually want.

I've just re-read your post actually, and I may have mis-interpreted it. Do you perhaps mean that once you've fiddled with the sound, when you rewind it reverts to what it was before you edited it? If this is the case, have you made sure you've saved the sound before rewinding?

Somebody may be able to help more if you give us a bit more info

I'm using cubase re-wired through reason.

The problem is that when I set (& save) my sound modules or any of my VST'Is to the sound I'm after. When I press stop or rewind in either cubase or reason, the synth goes back to it's default preset.

And it's driving me MAD!!!

The strange thing is that it doesn't always happen.

I hope this is enough info, I'm not too good with the techical terms, I'll check what you've suggested already but any more advice would be much appreciated.
