I've been trying for the longest time to get a good bass-drum synth in Fruity Loops, and I'm finding it absolutely impossible.

The sound I'm going for is used in the song My style from the darkside by Angerfist.

It's a really crazy, violent (best words to describe it) bass drum. And I'm striving to get something very much like it, so I can begin the tune making.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

I think you're looking for a gabba kick - it's relatively simple to do: There's two possible ways I see you doing it:

First, start with a 909 kick with a long release that sorta moves downward in pitch as it decays. You can probably find one online or use the 'fruit kick' plugin to generate one on the fly (which will produce more satisfying results, if you know how to use it, as it allows you to personally configure all aspects of your kick.) Be sure it has a LONG release so that the drums run in to eachother and mesh in to that pounding, thumping, chugging bassline.

Next step is DISTORT THE F*CK OUT OF IT.

My suggestion is to compress it first using fruity compressor - make the compression tight and the gain unbelievably high. Then run it through Fruity Bass Boost - this'll cause it to clip and give it a rough edged sound. Use a fruity 8-band EQ to bring extreme bassline clipping back under control and then stack a fruity quick distortion on top of it which should give it enough of a demonic sound for anyone's needs. THere's also a freeware plugin available somewhere online called cjf_crusher which absolutely ANIHILLATES samples with analog-style distortion. For added effect, add a subtle close reverb which will accentuate the distortion.

That's what's worked for me. Be sure to keep that bass drum under control though - otherwise it'll overrun the rest of your song!

Even better, create one in sound forge using the FM synth :)
Or just use a sample, and edit it if you want originality :)

I prefer the second method. Pre computed samples/effects lower CPU usage.

I'm going to download Sound Forge tonight, and I'll try and make a few then. I already downloaded about 20 gabba kick samples, all of which are great.

But you can't use them too close to one another, or the sound doubles up, and you can tell really easily it's just a sample and not a synth.

Either way, thanks a lot, guys.

No... LET them run in to eachother! It has a much cooler sound...!

And also, don't pirate software. Not cool at all.

lol..forget synths...just use samples for kicks
effects and whatnot are fine, but it will take forever to get a top notch kick yourself.
