I want to get a cheap but effective sampler. Does anyone have any advice on which, what and how good. Do I need anything special to plug it in to my mixer or is it ready to go outta the box. Also what's a samplers memory like these days, how many minutes or seconds can you get on most?

If you jus' need it for dropping a few samples into a mix, then you may want to look for a Yamaha SU10. I got one for £50 2nd hand and it does the job sweet. It can sample from 11.64kHz to 44.1kHz (CD Quality) but sample time is short at 54 seconds, and thats on the lowest sampling rate (11.64). You only get 19 seconds at CD quality. Having said that, that's been enough for me! It's also a small unit (Bout VHS tape size, but thicker and shorter) so portability is good. It has line in/out to connect to yr mixer and midi ports too. Few other funky features aswell, look it up.
There are better samplers but they are more monnies. I reckon this little bugger is fine, but depends on what you wanna use it for.

That does sound sweet, but can I only have one sample on at a time? Or can I have several? Price seems really good second hand and although the time is short, 20ish seconds at top quaility or nearly a minute would do fine to start with, nice one matey 8-)

If you mean how many of the buttons can you push at once (Technical term that is! LOL!) then 2 at CD quality and 4 on the lowest quality. Maybe theres a three in the middle too, but I can't remeber coz the thing is at home and I'm not!

To be honest it's good enough for messin' about with! Obviously if you wanna use it in a studio, it aint that great.

20-56 seconds is quite a bit of time for samples. Even on lower quality they sound okay, especially if you are gonna drop a sample over a track or summot.
