hmm, kinda worrying me this one I'm guessing it's something to do with my carts/styli.
my setup:
2X PDX 2000 decks
shure m44g carts n styli
gem' EX 26 scratch mixer
easiest way to describe what happens on all of my records with certain sounds is to pick the latest (and worst sounding) example of it. Just got rock me softly, and at the break down as the woman says michelle the 'ch' sound (you all know what I mean as you say it, but I don't have the skills to explain it :P) sounds all distorted and nasty liek you get on low quality recordings.
it does it with all of these 'ESS' and 'SHH' sounds, but it's only been really noticable on rock me softly and DFM 01 (forver with me)
any ideas what could be causing it? everything else (including the main parts of those songs, sound fine.. just 'those' sounds.
any help/insight much appricated :)

thanks man, I'll give it a try, will edit this post with what happens :)
EDIT: No help! :'( still the same, I'll get a mate to bring his carts + styli over and see if that's the problem.
I checked and I'm pretty sure it's not the speakers or mixer :/

could be your volume settings. i've got a gemini mixer as well so if you set the settings the same as me they should be ok if that's the problem.
gain: round about the 12 o clock mark,clipping around +1 - +3
i'm assuming you've got it wired to the master output, set that anywhere in the mid range so it's not too quiet and not too loud

A friend had the same trouble on his Technics when he first had them. To resolve this we did what Oli G said. Just keep fiddling!

may sound a bit stupid, but maybe your needles need cleaning? filth on the needles can cause poor quality sound

if its only on a few records that means either bad pressing or bad mastering (or both). I have noticed the same thing on a lot of represses that often get rushed to the pressing plant a bit too fast.

it's on a wide range of labels I'm afriad, it's dependant on the sound not the pressing. I guessing I need to clean my carts and styli properly.

Edit: oops I didn't even read the whole thread. Anyways, I have a gemini and the faders have lasted through many thrashings so I dunno. For sound issues the first thing to do is get one of those little brushes that comes with your carts and brush the stylus clean. Dust and dirt can be quite noisy

your crossfader could just be dirty. try taking it out and cleaning it first before you do anything. i thought my fader was cream crackered at first but it turned out to be clogged up. but now it really has had it.

The last time my crossfader went out I didn't have money to buy a new one for awhile and I found that my mixing really improved because I got used to depending on the channel faders. Could be a good thing.
Now I always keep a spare and I cover up my mixer when I'm not using it, to keep dust out. If you get some of that 'air in a can' stuff and spray it into your fader it might clean it out enough to keep it usable for awhile.

heh, yeah thats exadcly what I'm thinking, frankly I'm much more dismayed by the styli . . . I was under the impression that last me quite a whiel longer than this? They are def clean but are just DOA when it comes to high frequences.
