and im not even sure if cakewalk sonar is used for making tunes...maybe its used for organizing stuff from output gear.

Hey joe... personally, i find Fruity Loops the best for producing dance music (but clearly you would disagree), but i also use acid alot, and i guess you could use that to produce some tracks. However, something tells me you're looking for a program that will allow you to make songs without anything else, ACID doesn't make it's own sound (that make sense?) you'll have to record your samples and loops elsewhere and import them into acid to mix. I've never used Project 5, and never finished a song in Sonar, just messed around with it, not enough to make a solid opinion.

I'd say Fruity Rox!!
How does fruity suck? I'm guessing its too complex. Thats one of the reasons why people (who have never made computer music before) are confused by it.

Fruity is probably the easyest to use. Its a great little program to start with. If you want to get really complicated try reason 2.0 or cubase ( which allso uses external sounds ). But theire really hard to use. If you need help with fruity take a look on theire website. Its got a manual on there

Fruityloops is by far the best, it's just slightly imposing with its official looking interface, insanely small and poorly labled knobs and incredible number of buttons. Efficiency in fruity comes from nothing other than memorizing everything ;)

I study at a music conservatorium doing a course usuing Cubasis, i dont really like it, to old and to standard. I'm looking for a program now but havnt made up my mind yet, i have a key board and would like to use that aswell.
What other gear do i need..soundcards, memory etc? I have a Compaq Presario. its about 3 years old. and is abit slow these days.
Also i was thinking about buying a seperate computer all together, one of those cheap ex government ones? would they be alright?
thanks a heapa

Weba, if your not a fan of Cubasis, I would suggest you get hold of demos of the following 4 programs:
Logic Audio
Cakewalk Sonar
Reason 2
FruityLoops
Hmmm thinking about it, Logic isn't actually available on the PC anymore, but I still use it coz it is far more fluid to use than Cubase..... have a scout around on the internet for it though, you may find something.
The Compaq Presario is a laptop isn't it? Laptops 3 years ago weren't really all that good when it came to music making..... Desktopwise though, I still use a PIII 700MHz puter, I've stuffed it full with 1GB of RAM (needed if you use alot of soft samplers - if not you can get away with 512MB or even 256). I havn't really had any problems with this setup ata ll, and I tend to use alot of VSTis.
Soundcard wise, theres another thread knocking around somewhere....here it is:
http://www.happyhardcore.com/forums/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=&TOPIC_ID=7522 Dunno about the ex government computers...... I personally would buy new as your less likely to run into problems with components failing and stuff. Matthew aka DJ Underloop -------------------------- "Turn that shit up!!!!!"
