I have just published my first (very simple) program called Hirakata Randomizer that will help you learn basic Hiragana, Katakana and Japanese Romanji characters by randomizing and showing them on the screen. You can also choose to be tested by typing (in order to type in Katakana or Hiragana, you need to have a Japanese keyboard).

Cruel Core, are you physic or something?
I've actually just picked up on wanting to start learning Japanese, and as soon as I start acquiring the materials you post this!
I currently am a student of Yoshinkan Aikido, and wanted to start learning Japanese alongside it to better immerse my self in the Art. Right now the only thing I can do in Japanese is count to ten, and a few basic names of the my techniques.
This'll be a great little program to use while I'm bored at work to practice my Hiragana and Katakana without needing anything like flashcards.
If you have anything else that'll help a new student of Japanese, and any tips, let me know.

Osu!
I'm glad I could help.
I don't have many tips as I haven't continued after 1st degree x) but I've heard you shouldn't take breaks if you're learning Kanji. I dunno how it works with language schools' programs though. But I do know that i DESPERATELY needed a Hiragana and Katakana randomizer XD

I'm having issues getting it to display the characters correctly within the program. What version of Windows are you running? I have 7 Professional, and I've tried adding Japanese support via keyboard, and even changing my locale to Japanese and it refuses to want to load properly.

I use Vista, but that shouldn't mean anyhing. Have you installed Japanese fonts? Have you tried reinstalling after installing asian pack?

You dont need to have an active japanese keyboard layout. atleast not in Windows 7.
Applocale might help if you dont wish to install full asian support. I do this because I hate how japanaese unicode ****s up my paths and mIRC scripts ('\' gets changed to the Yen sign)
To be honest I hate it that swedish Windows, by default, has both Swedish and US english keyboard layouts active, so everytime I reinstall Windows I have to remove it.

Windows 7 won't allow you to install language packs unless you have Ultimate, which I only have professional. Which is total BS.

For whatever reason when I attempt to install Applocale it gives me nothing but errors, but doesn't tell me what the error is. How annoying..
