For those who have seen the 7D 7 cover I worked on, no explanation is required. For those who haven't, I'll just say that it's difficult to describe how bad it is. I'm now in the process of creating a new cover. Here's what I have so far:
With background
Without background
It's not complete, and there are some nagging issues I'm aware of, but I'd like to get some feedback so I don't end up jizzing all over the canvas and calling it 'art' again. What do you think? What would you critique if this were the actual, finished cover? Any criticism is appreciated (as long as it's constructive).

i like it better without the background, it feels less cluttered, very minimal.
however if you were to change how much the background stood out, maybe the color(to much orange) may work better

I like it with the background -
Your pics seem to be created as banners, not logos. Every other logo made so far is a square, but your pic has a huge empty part on the left that makes it odd. Id definitely rethink that.
Also, keep the whole 'D' in on the right! Doesn't look artistic to me, just looks like someone cut out part of the pic.

I would like it better if it was as the second one, but with some colour as the background as it looks quite bare with just black.

Imo. the second one is better and like Hard2Get said you need some colours in background.
You should use some blur aswell since edges hurt my eyes a bit.
