I had an idea yesterday of making a "hardcore archive" of older hardcore from like '93 to 2000. Similar to youtube but exclusively for hardcore. I'm wondering what others think of the idea, would you use it etc?

I think that sounds excellent, Stu. How are you envisaging it? Like a Youtube/Discogs hybrid purely for Hardcore from that era?

More like a youtube site would be easier but looking at some scripts it's possible to archive videos using groups. So you could have like a '98 - '99 group and all tunes from that era go into that group for simple searching. Using tag clouds could be a good idea too.

Sounds like a good start.
As for actually getting the videos/music up there, what are you thinking? Account/profile system like YouTube where you can upload what you want? Or a submission system with a few admins?
Could turn out to be a really, really useful little site this!

I would have to look at the scripts and what they are capable of but the submission system would be the best bet in order to keep it all neat and tidy because users could just upload anything in any place. Saying that though mods/admins could just keep track of what's going on and if users can flag videos then they could be moved/deleted by mods. I can get the site up and running really cheaply so that's not an issue, my main concern is what to do about copyright etc. It wouldn't be a site for illegal downloads just for listening purposes like youtube.

Copyright. Just having a stream-only (like YouTube) site is always going to help to start with - people don't start getting pissed off until you're making stuff available for download. Seriously unlikely anyone's going to have any beef with this - all the old Hardcore heads would probably encourage it, keep the music alive ethos n all that shiz. Legally though, I guess the best way forward is to have a user-orientated system, where people have to agree to YouTube style terms and conditions before they upload anything, ridding the actual site-owner of responsibility for the content.
This obviously all depends on what you determine the capabilities are, but I think a user-based site is the way to go. It's the best way to get a more extensive range of content, in a shorter amount of time. And it also hugely helps with that community-like environment that's key to getting sites of this nature up and running, and to getting the word out there.

Copyright's a bitch, I know that since one of my recent uploads was asked to be removed. But yea, for a archieve like this, only tracks that have gotten approval should have full/long clips, while unapproved (or approved in a way) should get samples, or just be listed. But a low quality sample should be allowed (but then, if you know your history, copyright companies wanted royalty payments on samples!).
For pure pleasure, maybe a few free downloads would be nice if those gets approved too.

Yeah, but surely you can only demand royalties if some money is being made in the first place? Which clearly isn't going to happen here.

No money would be made and no illegal downloads would be available. Any links to illegal files would be deleted. The way I would deal with copyright is to have the site streaming like youtube, a disclaimer like Jay says and obviously take down any videos that are requested to be removed by the owner, artists or record label. I doubt it would cause any problems with copyright but it's always at the back of the mind when starting something like this.

Right folks I've put together a site based on this idea. It's still a work in progress but I would like people to have a look and see what they think. You can upload videos, embed videos, link from other video sites etc. It's got years at categories rather than genres (because genre is always a contentious point). Forums are there but not active just yet. All social aspects like comments, facebook, google, twitter etc are all active. Please feel free to check it out, sign up, upload and give feedback. Do remember it's still being worked on and is still only an idea, depending on feedback and usage I'll decide if it has a future or not.

And what do you mean with, "exclusively Hardcore"?

havent seen one word about exclusive hardcore. imo. this platform would have more visitors when more videos are uploaded. What I seen so far is that this site is like Youtube, just with Hardcore Tunes.
my advice for mortis: make categories (HHC, UKH, Freeform, J-Stuff, Makina), same style like collections, maybe with larger images.
btw, that like box on left side produce glitches in firefox, please relocate it and make it static.
