Afternoon All!
If anyone is interested in writing a review for a piece of (musical) equipment they own
its about time we added some articles under that Equipment section.
So!
You need to have good knowledge of the equipment you are reviewing, enough to write a nice detailed review giving the products Ins and Outs, pros and cons.
It could be, a CDJ, Mixer, Turntable, FX Unit, Compressor, VST, Monitor, Microphone, DAW, Midi Controller etc

I'm sure this won't be the first time this post gets edited (especially for this next part) as this is a community after all!
As a guideline your review should include

Model Number
Price
First Impressions
Pros
Cons
Some sort of 'field' test (if possible and relevant) of how it performed in a rave/club Environment
A Summary

Remembering the entire time to be as fair as possible .
Judge the equipment for what it does for the price paid, trying your hardest to avoid any bias/negative bias toward branding etc, keep it straight, factual.

Feel you are up to the job?
Knock together a review of your favourite piece of equipment, that piece that inspires you, makes you happy, and send shoot it over to:
[email protected]
if you have me on facebook you can also send it as an attachment through private message.

We'll get this ball rolling!

Model: Pioneer DJM600
Price: 30 New / 200 second hand

The Pioneer DJM was originally designed to be a turntable, but after several attempts to attach a tone arm to the front faceplate Pioneer gave up, realising they had in fact added far too many knobs leaving next to no room. After initially switching the unit on (once the startup 'Cow Giving Birth.wav" sound has ended) the first thing you will notice is that the effects section is emitting a high pitched noise, this is easily rectified by pouring hot (not boiling) milk around the right hand side of the unit. One thing pioneer has been criticised for is excluding milk from the purchase price. Pioneer addressed these complaints by offering small plastic dinosaurs to any customers that raised a complaint with them.

Connecting equipment to the unit is easier said than done. 2nd generation DJM600s were shipped with lubricant and instructions of how to connect traditional RCA/Phono jacks to the more complex "Real Girl" female inputs that the DJM600 takes advantage of. Unlucky first generation customers were left with a trial and error situation, with first attempts often being chaotic and messy.

Once hooked up its best to ignore the smoke that is generated by the inverse tachyon feedback loop that is created when all equipment is connected and functioning correctly.
Pioneer have (rightfully) neglected faders on this latest DJM, after trial and error they found that faders weren't actually needed for DJing. The large blank space provided is useful for a number of things;
---Resting your head
---tapping your fingers (the louder you do this, the more the crowd react)
---or, in more normal cases, an area to create and store a miniture garden
Some DJs have been confused by the amount of knobs, indeed, many have stated that the usual two - two and a half are plenty; and that perhaps pioneer have taken the social norm a little too far by providing us with 47 knobs per fader. which brings us nicely onto the knobs - the first 7 knobs are spread out equally over the second set of 20, the initial 5 knobs relate directly to the top set of 3 knobs. 2 of the knobs (colour coded a dark red) control the overall volume of the middle 6 knobs. the treble has been separated from the mid and the bass by a third set of "fly" knobs which have no relation to the forth or the first set, which are coloured a slightly lighter shade of red. none of the second set are actually connected to the mixer and run independently of the DJM.

If you run the DJM without the spikes provided you're liable to set fire to your desk, so make sure you have correctly fixed the "spike anchor" to the front of the mixer, and that both "needle" forks are planted firmly in your groin.

As you probably know only the electric pink version of the 600 is available at the moment, but pioneer have stated that the teal/pastel version is on its way and will be with us by Christmas.

lack of sound from the unit is absolutely normal, and of course, preferential - how else would you be able to hear the hissing of the steam/hybrid drive that powers the unit and the tapping of your fingers.

My only issue with the unit itself is that it didn't come with more kitchen towel roll, as after a nights gig the bloodied remains of the roll they provide is nowhere near enough to stop the bleeding from my pouring tapped out stumps that used to be fingers, and aching that comes from my groin.
