Hi
I'm thinking of remixing some old pop tunes into hh tracks and was wondering if anyone knew the legal implications of this. Do I have to pay royalties to the original song writer? Is it still a copyright violation if the song is rewritten/remixed without using any of the original sounds? If I rewrite the lyrics is it still infringement if the original melody is still intact? For example, did Vinylgroover have to pay out when he remixed "let it be" by the beattles? Thanks for your help.

technically, i think it's illegal, but unless it breaks it big then don't worry about it.

If you remix a pop tune you need permission but if you change the words it's sort of a different song, but if record labels wanted to sue you for coping their work they will... so you do run a risk.

well, as part of my law studies i've touched a little on IP/copyright law, and going by some of the cases i've read through it's a matter of whoever's got the most expensive lawyers winning the case, regardless of how remote or tenuous the link between the original work and the alleged copy. also, it's a general rule that, unless there's megabucks being earnt from the alleged infringement, no-one's really gonna give a rat's ass. at most, they'll politely request a withdrawal from publication or something, and the *threat* of legal action is enough.
