Would anyone be willing to collaborate? I don't mean an entire song either, just working on melodies. My primary DAW is Cubase 5.

Seriously, I suck so badly at this. I can't even think of original melodies in my head, and I'm terrible at improvising. I need help.

You could always do what most new producers do (and some not so new ones as well come to think of it)....

yeh, rip of a well known chord progression and melody, change some of the notes to the lousy ones that the original producer had the good sense not to use,

and call it 'Original and New'!

Sorted.

When I write melodies, I usually work with intervals, and since I'm guessing you're wanting to write a hardcore melody, I'd stick with major intervals. I've written melodies where the bassline is on the root note of the chord, and then the melody starts on the major third. It also depends on what type of riff you want to write. Do you want a faster riff, with almost constant 16th notes (ex. Impact & Nomad - Utopia) or something that's more suited for a vocal (ex. Re-Con - Fuel to Fire)?

Just play around with major chords. But make sure your key doesn't change on each new chord. Haha.

Example time:
A chord progession I've used and still use is A minor, G major, F major, and then back up to G major.

The A minor gives the chord progression a cool effect when it resolves into the G major. It's tension and release.

So for example the first 2 bars could be something along these lines:
A,A,A,C,D,E,E,E,E,F,E,D and that would follow the rhythm of
1 (+) 2 (+) 3 + 4 + (1) + (2) + 3 + 4 + *

*Everything in the ( ) would be a rest and + would be the "and" or the off beat.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
