If your doing it just for a mess around i would say,
FL STUDIO
VENGEANCE SAMPLE PACKS
Then from there you can see if you like it or not, then you can expand as you wish!!

a pc and some decent headphones or speakers do the job
a midi keyboard is not necessary, besides its only useful you know how to play piano properly

have a look on Clickproduce if you want to make an easy start. There are lots of great genre specific loops and sample there to choose from. If you're starting out I would suggest either Logic or Cubase as recording software.

you'll need a good pc, good sound card, a sequencer, i suggest FL to start off, some studio monitors (not speakers) & midi controller if you wanna have a hands on approach, keys to play, knobs to tweek etc.......
it's an expensive game to get into, music theory knowledge is also a bonus

Hey!
It depends on how deep you want to dig urself into music producing.
First, I would try a lots of DAW, and figure out which fits you the best. (i think u can download a demo of all products)
http://flstudio.image-line.com/ http://www.propellerheads.se/ http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/cubase/start.html http://www.ableton.com/ The most important is which is the easiest to handle, so it puts you into a mood, that you want to learn a lot of music, synths, etc. (IMO it's really frustrating when ur looking at a very complex GUI, and ur dont know what to do..). FL Studio 9 is fine to me, but later on maybe i want to move to Cubase. Also I would recommend you to buy a good soundcard (EMU 0202 PCI/USB is pretty cheap, and got a really good sound quality), and buy some good speakers. Also, you need free time and endurance to accomplish your dreams 8) I hope that this message helped you a bit! Greetings from Hungary PS: Sorry 4 bad english :P www.soundcloud.com/smilecore
