Vancouver — Police are warning ravers and the nightclub set in this city of a substantial increase in a potentially harmful chemical cocktail that users call trail mix.
The cocktail, according to RCMP Cpl. Scott Rintoul, is typically a blend of potentially deadly ingredients including methamphetamine, ecstacy, Ketamine and the sexual aid Viagra.
"We're seeing a real increase right now in chemical cocktails," said Cpl. Rintoul.
"We are concerned first of the fact that methamphetamine is now increasing in use not only by itself but also with other drugs and the fact that Ketamine, which is a veterinary anesthetic, is also on the increase both by itself and also with other drugs."
Cpl. Rintoul said investigators tested 300 samples of drugs seized from nightclubs, raves and the street this summer and only "about 18 per cent were pure ecstasy."
The lab found "a real increase in Ketamine, methamphetamine and ecstasy, which are your chemical cocktails," he said.
Trail mix gives users a blend of buzzes depending on which chemical components are used.
Some of the effects include euphoria, energy and heightened sexual stimulation.
It sells for anywhere from $20 to $70 for a tablet.
High doses of ecstacy can cause muscle breakdown or cardiovascular or kidney failure and its long-term effects are unknown.
Methamphetamine, called speed on the street, can cause respiratory problems and even death.
Cpl. Rintoul noted most people don't know which cocktail they are buying, which makes the situation even more dangerous.
Vancouver Police Insp. Kash Heed said heroin has begun showing up in some batches of trail mix.
"There is some theory to support the fact that heroin is put in the (mix) to increase the addiction to that drug," Insp. Heed said. "Basically you don't know what product you are consuming (by taking trail mix)."

I think a great deal of these "reports" have to be taken with a pinch of salt (check that the salt isnt really coke though!).
The more of these reports come out the more paranoid people are gonna become & the less drugs are gonna be taken making that Police force's figures for the drugs that month/year drop (or at least thats the plan!!!)
A friend of mine is currently at Uni studying chemistry & he has throughly examined Ecstasy on 4 occasions (each time with 5 tablets from 5 different sources-though often they were the same anyway).
He did find some things you dont wanna know about (trust me) but all in trace amounts-nowhere near the amounts to do you harm. on average they did contain 25-45% MDMA (a lot higher than these "reports" ever claim!) However, there were al lot of other illegal substances in them, most worryingly ketamin or heroin showed in almost all of the tablets tested, again not in great amounts, but enough for it warrant a mention.
I just thought people should of what they were taking.
To summarise his conclusion-you could take a large number of tablets & all the other factors remaining stable (safe water intake etc), you'll still be (relatively) safe taking ecstasy. However, he also mentioned that mix cocaine intake with this & you're taking a very big risk (trebling even quadrupling your chances of the brain swelling).
Sorry if this bothers anyone-but they're the facts told to me by someone I trust (that take ecstasy on a regular basis).
