I always used Waves for compression and Blue Cat for EQ until I moved to Studio One then I found I didn't need anything other than Studio One's built in comp and eq plugins.

There isn't a best one, different compressors and EQ's sound different and produce different results for different situations. Aside from that the best stuff to be getting is Sony Oxford, SSL stuff and other industry standard brands, but they aren't cheap. Your looking to pay around 1000. But they offer whole suits of plugins. There is a massive range of good compressors you can get but again, entirely situation dependent. Once you have been using them for long enough you will learn to hear what is best for what job. Until you have got to that point it's probably not hugely important what you use.
I guess you can't go wrong with Waves and UAD. Waves stuff isn't much cheaper than what i described though UAD is, so probably the one to go for.

I usually just use CamelCrusher for compression and Fruity Parametric EQ 2 for EQ, and they work for me. I'm not an expert so I use pretty simple stuff ^^
