I have been using a virtual DJ program and I was wondering if I could DJ with this alone. Is it necessary to have your own sound system or any physical equipment? I am sure it helps, but I'm not sure if I absolutely need it right now. I know some clubs and venues have there own systems.
If not let me know what I would need along with my programs to give me a basic setup. I usually just get laughed at for deciding not to buy decks.

Well you are never going to be able to get gigs if you never use decks. You won't go to a club and use something like Virtual DJ, they will have some Pioneers set up most likely. If you can't afford decks then you need to find somewhere where you can practice on them at least (a friend's house), because there is no auto-beatmatch button on real turntables.

Personally I don't care for manual beatmatching... "Never send a human to do a machine's job." Choosing the right tunes and what you do with them once they're in sync matters a lot more.
I think laptop-based DJ-ing is becoming more and more popular, so if a venue won't have you because you're not using decks just keep looking for a more open-minded place.
Make sure you use decent software (what do you use?), have a good soundcard with two outputs (one for main out, one for headphone monitoring) and you can also use a cheap and cheerful DJ controller box with real faders and buttons to control your software. I reckon this actually requires a bit of extra hardware (you can actually get those two features integrated into one box), but it might be worth the investment.

I think everything that is Virtual DJ/Midi Controller/etc is crap. Sure you can start with it, like I did, but there's a time when you should get real decks! It's like that because more and more kids want to become DJ's because it's "cool" ( even if they have no clue about music ).
I'd recommend you two CD decks and a 2-channel mix, that should be a good beginning :)
Oh and... I think it's crap to use autosync. I mean I need like 3 seconds to beatmatch a track …

Well, at minimum you need a physical controller otherwise there's no way you can EQ or cut properly.

if you traing with it very very hard theres a maybe.. but as said here.. the beatmatch button (sync) sucks so you ever be able to do a flawless set.. get a controller with it and you have a slightly better chance. but either way.. it is possible. you just gotta stand the comments you will be getting like omg... you're performing with virtual dj only? how sad! .. :P but hey if ya good with it why not!

Thank you very much for all of your comments and advice. I will certainly look into a controller of some sort and feel it out. If need be later on down the line I will put some money into dual CDJ's and a mixer. And again, thank you for taking the time.

From a pure technical standpoint I think you're much better off going the laptop + controller way, so don't spend money later on CD decks. By that time they might even become pretty much obsolete... A similar debate was going on almost a decade ago, but then CD decks were evil, and turntables were the "right way". Pretty funny to see people insist on CD decks just because they got so used to them and refuse anything that's innovative.

What kind of head phones, sound card and, controller do you recommend? I am just taking a few recommendations, of course I will be doing my own research into these products. Just curious what the standard is being used out there.

Native Instruments' Traktor Pro is a very popular DJ software, which works with an impressive variety of controllers (http://co.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=traktorready). The EKS Otus controller looks very nice, too: has built-in audio and it can control almost all aspects of the DJ software, plus you get an integrated trackpad, like the one in laptops.
