So I finally caved today and bought this:

I've been wanting to get into producing for a long time
The keyboard comes with a "lite" version a Ableton Live

But as far as purchasing a full program goes what do you guys suggest /use yourselves?

personally I was thinking reason

I don't have a mac so no pro tools :(

Try a demo of FL Studio and see if you like it :)

good on ya, buddy. where'd you pick that up? i was told two years ago that i was going to get something like this, but my bro is a little delinquent when it comes to gifts.

he is actually in school right now for audio engineering (and also my identical twin)!! he's focusing more on guitar and non-techno stuff, but i'm sure that all of the principles apply. he taught me a lot about music, and i'm looking forward to learning a lot more from him.

he's been learning pro tools for the past 3 years and thinks pretty highly of it. i haven't heard much about reason, but i know that cubase is pretty much the industry standard so you should look in to that.

do you have any background in music?

Try Cubase, FL or the full version of Live (or Logic if you're on Mac). Reason afaik doesn't support third party VSTs. The synths and plug-ins included, i'm sure, are great but i would hate to be limited by those (never tried em but i love the vsts i've built up).

@Vitalism: Why haven't you returned my PM!!?!? >:(
and I got it at Wentworth music 200$
if you've got the time you should go in, bring a few cd-r's with hardcore on them and play with the CDJ-1000 & CDJ-400 they got setup

I've been taking piano lessons for a few months, that's about it

@Meathead: Reason doesn't have VST's but they have refills and really crazy synthesizers apparently

but cubase looks like the way to go

*edit*

think the site rules would prefer it if *******s werent brought into the discussion :)

i wish i had continued to take piano lessons :/ now i think im going to just have to buy some books and learn myself..maybe get some software to help me along i dunno

but yeah - cubase is my weapon of choice! :)

you could always rewire reason into cubase if you wanted to use reason as well, but reason does a good enough job on its own and the virtual racks it comes with should be able to make practically any sound other vsts can with a little work

I didn't say the "T" word >.>

But I think I'll go with reason, just like the layout of it
I will still try cubase though

Nobody mentioned them, no, but Cubase has no "official" demo. So to try Cubase.... you see where i'm going with this?

Rewire is always an option same can be done with FL. I wouldmn't dive into this without trying your other options mate. Impulse buys are all well and good but you may regret them at a later point. I'd be regretting getting a 25 key MIDI keyboard right now. I have the exact same keyboard but the 49 key and that's not enough for me, and i can't even play.

A lot of people don't i'm sure, tbh they're the least important thing for actually producing a track. That money would have been better spent putting towards some monitors, a soundcard or a better DAW. They are good for jamming though, playing about with riffs and chord progressions.

Yeah, I have a microKorg hooked to a guitar amp for that :) Generally I write my riffs in my DAW, but sometimes it's great to just hammer a real keyboard rather than a virtual one
