do you mean in terms of pitch (notation) or in terms of timing (tempo)?

usually you build a track around an acapella rather than trying to make it fit an existing track

QTF.

i always import the pella first & find the correct bass key... the rest is gravy

What pella is it? Someone might have a midi which you can work off.

do one bar at a time

Just move the bass notes up the scale till it doesn't sound wrong. It's like beatmatching - when it stops sounding wrong, you know you have it right.

If you're really unable to do that, you can load the pella up in cubase variaudio or melodyne and it will tell you what notes the vocal is hitting. Pick from those notes for each bar I guess...
