i think, from the question, he's still using presets....
so my advice would be to play random presets at the same time in the piano roll
(known as layering) until you get an idea of what sounds good with what.
once you get your head round that, then move to 3xosc, as you're just starting out the 3xosc is an excellent starting point for synthesis. once you get your head around that, learning to use a more complicated vst will, in the long run, be a lot easier.
