For me, this stage of producing a tune is what seperates amateurs from proffessionals. I've completed a degree in music and read up alot on mastering but theres still some things which I can tell arent up to scratch.
Does anyone have the same problem or any useful information on this topic? Or is it just me lol

What is your degree specifically in, since there is lots of music degrees? Anyway, if say you had learned music technology for example then you would still be relatively new to sound engineering/mixing because a course like that only goes into a relatively small ammount of depth on the subject in comparison to being educated specifically in sound engineering.
Either way though, education or not, you can have years worth of information in your head that will mean absolutely nothing if you have no experiance. Experiance is everything here; but of course with the correct information and understanding they go hand in hand.

I guess you'll have to let people know what you think isn't up to scratch before they can impart knowledge

the mixing down and mastering is really important imo..it does make the difference between a good track and a top quality track...but i agree with mortis if you are looking for advice then post one of your tracks and im sure you will get all the feedback you need

Well to hard2get, my foundation degree was in music production..which covered a wide range of areas but never really went into enough depth of the mastering stage. the top up year was just music so was even more vague. We learnt more about production techniques, which i think i'm quite skilled at haha.
Ive had good feedback from people who are signed and releasing tunes etc...but i think it maybe worth sending my mixed song to a mastering engineer and that will probably make all the difference.
I have had tracks released on imodownload which have got into 2nd and 3rd in the download charts so i musnt be going to far wrong.
The one area where i can tell the main difference is when i burn the track to cd then play it back on my cd decks. The difference is there 2 see. not drastic but then again not professional enough...

right well all i can say is just work on your mixdowns..if the track is mixed down well it wont be hard to master it cause there wont be much to improve

true, maybe am goin slightly wrong on the mix down.
when im mastering i wud normally use slight stereospread, compressor, limiter and maximizer. n it sum cases maybe slight reverb.....

i eq alot out of leads..hats claps snares and any other add on sounds i call them...lik on my lead i usually cut lik 100hz upto 150 and boost the higher frequencies slightly just to take some bottom off and make it seem brighter..i would normally take lik 150 off hats and percussion aswell and upto lik 500hz on the ride depending how rough it is..levels are really important aswell to leave room for when u are mastering the track
if i was mastering a track..or attempting more lik..id use compresser,brick wall limiter and eq...just keep it simple..maybe thats just me haha
also ive heard or read i cant remember that its bad to use a compresser and a limiter together when amstering????

Well i was speaking relatively. My point was that skill comes with experiance, as oppose to having no experiance. The profesional tunes you hear are mixed and mastered by people who have been doing what they do for alot of years, so you need to bare that in mind when comparing your own tunes. Don't be discouraged, knowing this means that literally the only difference between you and someone more professional is that they have been doing it longer.
If you keep practicing and learning things from the right people (actual professionals) then you'll be on the right track and learning fast.

a basically do everyting u just said there cialin.
eqin is a big part of making space for everything like your defo right there. yeah a wud also use slight eq on the master but maybe a shudt use compressing and limiting. wot do u do to make the rack loud as ya can? just use the maximzer or make up gain on compressor?

a totally agree mate. I always keep in mind that these guys are top of the scene and like ya say have been doing it for years. A suppose its just down to practising, trial and error, and using your ear to see what sounds right and what doesn't.

if im bein honest id whack on tracks deluxe 3...set the preset to master 2 and tweak it very slightly to what i feel it needs...i find you really cant go wrong with that..you use reason and cubase so im not sure what mastering things you use
