Hi everyone,

Just got my cdj 1000 mk3s about a week ago (still getting used to them) but I just had a few queries.

First off the bpm counter doesn't seem very accurate. Im pretty sure none of my choons are 80ish bpm but it seems to think this. Its not a big problem because I have been mixing long enough not to need it but just wanted to see if this is a common problem.

Secondly I don’t have my 1210s hooked up at the moment (due to lack of space) but when I do have it all set up together how is my vinyl going to sound next to mp3s? Will it be noticeable when I switch between them?

Which brings me on to my last question which is, I am downloading at 320kb is the difference between wav that massive? I have read a few things on this and I’m sure its come up on here before but is it worth my extra money? I know it’s only an extra 25p per track but that sure will add up to massive amount over a year.

Cheers

(wow, that ended up being longer than i intended)

I'm guessing the BPM problem is the same as Virtual DJ's counter issue. A lot of my Scott Brown tracks are given half the BPM that they are. So your tracks are probably 160, rather than 80. That's just my guess cause doubling the obviously wrong bpm always worked for me.

Don't use BPM counters, even if it was 100% accurate there wouldn't be enough decimals to lock a mix.
It'll jsut hinder your progress learning. You're far better off putting tape over them and using your ears.

With that said, it's giving you half-tempo because nobody expects people to play music at 180bpm. If it says 85 it really means 170

Yeh cheers guys, I thought that would be it.

I like the idea of nobody expecting music that fast to be played

I don't think it's that, it might be counting just the snares on 2 and 4 only :P I've played house tracks at 128 that displayed as 64bpm, so don't think it has anything to do with expectations ^^

yeah mate dont worry about the bpm count mate mine shows 89 in some parts of a track & then 177 in other parts

you will probs already know this but just in case you dont
90% of the time as long as your pitch is saying the same on both cdjs then your beats are right anyway

if you want me to explain it a little more just say so mate

but like i said you will probs already know what i mean
its just with you saying you havent bin mixing long i thought id just mention it

I wouldn't say that 90% of the time that if your pitch stays the same your beats will be right, that is a slight over generalisation, but anyway.

Yeah as has been said the CDJ-1000's often Half the BPM for Hardcore, as Dain-Ja said it's best not to use them, or even just use them as a really rough guide to get you into a certain ballpark, then you can figure it out from there with your ears.

Thanks for all your replys guys. That clears it up. I was already doing what you sujjested (getting it in the ballpark with bpm counter then matching as if it were vinyl) been mixing on vinyl for about 6 years so not a problem doing it like that.

Any1 got any thoughts on the second half of my post: wav vs mp3, and how it sounds mixing vinyl with mp3s?

its gotta do wif 33rpm/45rpm as i been told ... vinyl is switchable on that .. cd's ?? not all atleast!

320 wav isnt compressed therefor ppl find that sound better.. only a trained ear hears the diffrence between 320 wav/mp3 really :)

nd unless ur vinyl is dmged or u play mp3s on low bitrates the diffrence aint noticeable

Please if you're going to spin, Don't use bpm counters. They are very unreliable and it will hold you back as a dj
