no such thing as dumb bro,
curiosity is the best teacher and asking questions is the only real way to learn.

okies, VST's
well as u know cubase VST is a sequencer...
now with the integrations and evolutions of the "Virtual Studio" we have VSTi's and VST effect.
Ill also explain dx which is essentially the same but a lil behind.

OKies, now...
VST effects- these are "Plugins" which u install (like normal SW)and use within your host application, such as cubase, fruityloops, orion, logic and Wavelab etc.
These are effects, like distortion, reverb, delays, and all that funky sound mangling kind of thing.
Now to use these you need to route your audio THRU them. U can usually access these from your sequencers mixer or track section. some of these can be used remotely via midi.
Now you NEED to have a host app to use these.
Some effects are straight .dll files, just copy and paste into your VST plugs directory.

secondly we have VSTi's - The "i" stands for instrument.
These are great lil plugins, which again require a host app like CB, orion etc etc the differnce this time, is that these plugins GENERATE noise, whether it be a synth, a sampler, a drum module whatever...
Some of these can actually be used as standalone pieces, like Pro52 and FM7.
if u have a VSTi playing a chord, u can then route the audio out from it, into one of the VST effects... all in the one environment.
Which is what makes cubase so good.

Now...
moving on...
DX effects. These are virtually the same as VST effects, however, these require a DX environment, such as Cakewalk, Soundforge, Logic to be the host app. VST effects and DX effects are pretty much identical in the way they work. I have noticed that DX effects are alot more CPU intensive, but can be so bloody powerful, it makes me wonder why i still use HW...
Check out the Beatmodel pack.
and finally DXi... these are instruments, such as Pro52 and dreamstation which work within a DX environment like Sonar.

now youll find alot of good effects, and youll find alot of crap too...
for some free VST plugs check this link, its quite good

hope this helps :)
