Hey, wondering if you guys wanted to share some tips for getting enough material to write a full length tune (approx 7 minutes or 300 bars) from just a riff/idea.
For the sake of argument, assume the riff/idea is 8 bars. Generally, you're looking at about 32 bars for intro + 32 for outro, so that leaves us with 236 bars. If we were to simply repeat our 8 bar riff (30 odd times!) our listeners would become very bored indeed!
What then, can we do to create enough interesting material for a full length tune?
Here are some of the ones I know about:
- Bringing instruments in/out (For example, have 8 bars with just synth, then bring in some keys for another 8)
- Alternate between two variations of the riff (effectively giving you a 16bar riff)
- Have a 'break down' (Basically after a build up/climax, a section where there is only one or two instruments (usually synth/strings/piano playing)
- A 'simple section' - this is my own term for a section of the tune which gives the listener a bit of a rest - you've still got a beat but perhaps it's less complicated, in addition the bassline will also be simplified (perhaps just one note) and some bleeps or other effects over it
Keen to hear your suggestions on this one!
