kontakt is a sampler and
audition 2 is a standalone wave editor.
if you're only going to use a standalone wave editor for simple stuff, then you can just download Audacity instead and save yourself some money :)

For wave editing or recording, use Sony Sound Fordge! - I Wouldn't put my money on anything else!
and as for snyths, depends what sound you want!
For me... being a trancewhore, all i need is the superwave buddle!
Superwave Trance & Superwave Pro - has EVERY sound i could ever ask for!

Give him a break. He just got into this. Waves programs are VERY expensive and noone in his right mind would buy them unless he knew he needed them.
As mentioned Superwaves is pretty phat for trance-leads. Another popular VST is z3ta+, which is a bit of a CPU hog, but works wonders with leads.
Synthation V-Station is really good for basses.
You don't need to buy a crapton of synths. There are a lot of free alternatives that work really well in the beginning. Once you get better at making music, you can look in to the VST demos and decide whether or not a certain synth is for you.
Good luck!
PS:
A link to a good VST database: http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php
