Can anyone recommend what needles are ideal for scratching and now of any books/website that might give tutorials on how to scratch properly?

would like to know that myself.i know of a book called how to dj dunno if gives any info bout scratching tho.seen it in hmv.

I assume you're talking scratching to HHC.
I've found that learning how to do chirps and marches (basic scratches) are very important.
Get yourself a copy of QBert's DIY Scratching Vol.1. VERY GOOD reference.
As far as needles go, you're probably gonna wanna get Shure M447s (favourite for turntablists) but i'd reccommend Shure M44Gs. They have high sound quality and also less weight is needed for tracking. They both hold the groove quite the same. But you don't HAVE to get these needles. I spent 2 months with Stanton 680HPs (these were the old school scratching needles. I mean damn. I remember seeing Rock It and Grandmaster DXT had them) and they hold the groove well. Just test out needles and find ones to your liking.
Sites aren't that good for teaching how to scratch. Nothing beats a personal reference or video. Seriously check out QBert. It's good stuff.

pfft, you don't need to stickin books. I learned most just by listening to tapes over and over, going to dmc regionals, and lots and lots of practicing
I personally like q-bert ortofons, shure has some good needles as well (what most of my hip hop friends use) if your wanting to scratch get a pair of OMs, especially if you're using a curved tone arm.

How are those QBerts actually? I heard the cue burn is pretty bad but they are loud as HELL

I like 'em, have really good back cueing and scratch response. haven't really knowticed any burning
