right then :D

im an ameture producer (for now lol)... with pretty good tech sense about me..

id like to get into the DJ side of things aswell!

preferably the good old vinyl, maybe cd decks/and some laptop combo crazystuff too!

but wanna start with just the vinyl! (wanna get the basics down and the feel for it!)

now heres the thing... im VERY short of £££££££'s

i know nothing about decks and mixers (routing sound through cables and recording stuff wont be a problem, i got that sussed) just the actual equipment, ie whats good/bad what to watch out for stuff like that.

just after some recomendations for CHEAP (but reliable!!) decks and a mixer,

what i would plan to spend the most on is the mixer, the rest can be dirt cheap aslong as it works! and preferably portable in someway too. (ie so its small and i can put it away in the minimal amount of space..)

i can guess im not askin much ... cheap + reliable + compact... lol kinda a contradiction XD

aaand i own NO vinyl... so im after some cheap(ish) vinyl second hand.. at least tunes id reckognise (and enjoy, classic hhc, scott browns happyer tunes ect).

id be happy with just maybe 5-10 ...erm.. plural of vinyl? vinyls?

to practice with.

my eventual aim... be a top producer/DJ that gets booked for huuuuge events ect ect lol lol lol (i can dream!)

gotta try at least :D lol

im gonna take a stab at a budget... £250? cant go over that really, probably dont have that much XD i dont mind saving a little, but id like to get started pretty damn soon!

hope that made sense lol

thnx for any advice :D

OK, my advice. I actually think I started out on about that sort of budget.

First up, its well worth spending more on your decks than your mixer. I mean decks are more expensive than mixers anyway, but its worth getting a better quality turntables and a lesser quality mixer than the other way round.

For £250 your not going to get much for your bucks though. Mixerwise I'd say have a look at the Behringer range. Plenty of bang for your buck. No doubt Silver will come on and diss them :-), but I've used them pretty much constantly and not had any probs. If your on a budget then defo give them a shot.

Deck-wise, hard to say really. Most of them in that price range are a much for a muchness. If you can, get direct drives. Everyone is going to say that so I'm going to get it in there first! You can get them these days for a few quid more than belt drive.

When I started out I got belt drive. Harder to mix with for sure - you really have to work at your mixes! I've actually stuck with them though! The reason being for the very reason most people hate them. Because I'm constantly having to work at getting my mixes tight on them I'm not getting (too) lazy in my mixes. Yes they'll sound shite for a while (I still do!) but its a learning process rather than a "become a superstar DJ in a week" thing for me.

(dj superstore....XD)

whole package thingy... now usually packaged stuff is kinda crap i guess, but at £170 for 2 direct drive decks (as sugessted :D) and a mixer...

can it be that bad? or is it cheap tat? (looks smart tho )

^^ Looks good for a starter set-up.

If you've never touched vinyl before be prepared for an awfull let down. It's not as easy as it looks ;)

They're probably really rubbish direct drives and i'll be the mixer will bleed in 2 days.

However i'm a scratch nut so if you're just mixing it'll be fine.

I'd try and find someone that lives near you that will let you spin on their decks. spend the money you have on records and possibly needles and use their setup to make sure this is something you really want to do so you don't piss away a couple hundred and then have to turn around and sell them at a loss.
