Does anyone have any tips / recommendations for making hardcore style basses, as used by Darren Styles, Squad E etc etc.

Any examples of what you talking about would be cool.

Cheers.

The V-Station can create such bass's no problem. The key thing in this case is the use of unison. Create something like a Trance lead but have it an octave lower, and and use different waveforms, like maybe 2 saw oscilators and a square oscilator for example.

Detune 2 oscillators maybe as much as 25 cents against each other and leave the other one centred. If your using a square waveform, make sure its an octave lower than 1 or 2 of the saws, or it won't have the required thickness (a square waveform at the same octave or higher than a saw will sound relatively thin, but an octave lower will sound very fat). If your using the V-Station, have as many uni-voices as you like, the more the better (the phatter it will be), and turn the uni-detune to full or nearly full.
I know you will have heard this bit before, but roll of the low end of the resulting sound and layer it with a sub bass sound.

This is just a very basic starting point though, where you go from here depends on the exact sound you want.
Here is an example of what i just described:
