So i've got some money spare and i've been meaning to get some studio monitors for a while now, because, from what i've read on these forums, they seem to boost the quality of production dramatically.

Am I right in thinking that studio monitors give you the raw sound, whereas normal speakers enhance the sound, making it harder to master a track?
If so, can anyone point me to some decent monitors that are under £100 that aren't too big either...I have litte desk space...

Cheers people.

Slik

You're right to a degree. The purpose of studio monitors is such to give a true representation of the sound so the engineer can mix down/master the track so it will sound good just about everywhere.

I suggest trying ebay. You can get some great deals. I just checked the UK ebay and there are some NS10s that are going to go real cheap.

If you're really serious about getting some really good monitors, see if you can save up another £200 and your options will be greater.

I would take ryg0r's advice and save up a bit more money if you want some reasonable monitors.

I use a pair of KRK RP-6's for producing, they're fantastic for the price.

I'd recommend them to anyone starting out looking for a first set of monitors.

Hmmm, I don't think I will be able to save up any more as I have no money coming in until I get a job (just left school you see).
I made £100 from selling CD's in my local area and i've had that £100 for about 2 months now and i'm just not getting anymore cash.

Maybe later on this year i'll invest in some decent monitors, but right now anything will be better than the speakers i've got, they torment me with their complete brokenness and hassle from the gammy frequencies.

Not going to be much choice for £100 but I'd suggest getting in touch with somewhere like Digital Village for advice http://www.dv247.com/.

Cheers bulby.

Can I ask, what's the difference between active monitors and passive monitors?

These Fostex are around £100 for a pair, they sound very nice and they are powered.

I would stay clear from Alesis MK1 Actives, I had a pair and I have recently sold them on ebay. They are lacking in bass and the detail in the high frequency's are not good. They make a loud pop when they are switched on and there is always noise comming from the tweater even when they have no audio cable plugged in. Im sure you can get better for not much more £.

Get a pair of Fostex PM0.5 Active Monitors PMO.5 Speakers I have a pair, I payed about £100 pound for the pair and they sound great.
They are bi powered amp so each speak has its own amplifier built in. Great for the price too.
