How has ever started a topic which has gone out of hand and wished they didn't start it? *raises hand*
I think we should lock our own topics by choice!!!

From experience on another site where users can delete their own threads I would agree with Whispering's comment of "hell no"
If you regret posting something then maybe you should take a bit of time to engage your brain before hitting the post button. Its not like "real life" conversations where once you've said something its said..... on here you type, re-read, edit if need be and then once your completely happy (taking as long as you like to do this) you can then hit the post button.
Topics should only be locked if they are in breach of the rules of the site - not because somebody felt a little bit embarrased as they are getting flamed for making a lame comment. Can you imagine how many topics would get locked if members could lock their own topics for this reason?

However the text posted belongs to the individual that posted it. So therefore perhaps in conjunction with being able to manage your own information/documentation then surely the delete function on posts should be allowed to function?

It should work, but doesnt. Just edit the text away and write "Mod's delete" and i or the other mod's will delete it as soon as we see it (for quicker response PM Underloop or me). This of course is just a temporary solution till the button is fixed. But you can still edit the text away as you feel, so i dont see the problem. Topics however contain text from various members, one user should not have the freedom to lock topics when others are in a middle of a conversation (except for admins and moderators that have to enforce the rules). However some members have requested in the past from me to lock/delete their topics, and i have done so when i've seen it being appropriate.

not really... if someone was getting flamed with a passion... they would only start a new topic.... give a link to the locked one and then start bitching again... (people are gay like that I'm afriad)
this would also give the forum more topics then what is needed!!! basiccly like "user spam" NOT GOOD!!!
so in my opin... no!
if you get flamed then you sould just learn from your mistakes!!
